New to Canada

Post by CaptainR »

Hi all Canadian Aviators :)

I came to this beautiful country Canada 4 months ago and I started my flight training at Cornwall Aviation Ltd right from scratch. I have my PPL,Night and Multi engine rating and am now working towards my INRAT and Commercial ( I need more PIC time ). I haven't seen anything outside of Cornwall . I've been to CYSH, CNL3, CNP3, CYGK and CYJN but just in and out of these airports just to get my logbook stamped.
-> I am planing to rent a plane before Christmas and fly around Canada during the holidays . I want to see more of this beautiful country and build my PIC cross country time as well. There is really cheap plane rental at Cargair in mascouche ( forgive my spelling error ) in Montreal I read about on this forum. What's your say as Canadian Pilots :)
|| Conditions :
|| - I want any place renting planes at low cost including fuel cost ( around less than 130$/hr for a C150)
|| - and a place like Montreal or Ottawa ( which is close to Cornwall making my travel easy ) to rent the planes from
|| - I want to rent it for a couple of days too ( I may not return back to the airport on the same day ) ||

-> Can I land at Toronto Pearson (CYYZ) with my PPL in a C150. I know about the landing fees and calling beforehand for a spot ( I dont know if this question may sound foolish but I'd love to go there . I love challenges and I believe I can learn more if I go and screw up there especially with ATC :D )

I welcome all replies .
Thanks all :)

Does anyone notice that a lot of these questions, a lot of these postings are very similar. I mean that the problems presented never really change, and we're answer the same CARs or renting questions or whatever, constantly...

And no, don't land at pearson. Just...don't.

It's not that bad. Go there off-hours and
fly the approach with the knobs all the way
in and you'll do ok.

Seriously. Just don't fly a 70 knot five
mile final, and do what you're told.

My objective, flying into a large airport, is
to try to get ATC to tell me to slow down
for the kerosene burners in front of me

I will try it then in the C150 and let you know :)

Well, Colonel, it's not to say it cant be done. I've done 05 in a SuperCub and 06R in an original C182. I just think it'd be a better idea if he had a bit more knowledge with regards to how to work the system: IFR Flow Control, YYZ tower guys, etc. I just find it's very easy to get them to say no, but if you know who you're talking to, and what to say to them, then you're fine. I'd recommend he goes with someone who knows the airspace, such as yourself.

I think if I someday decided to go to Toronto for whatever reason a person would go to Toronto for, I'd probably try that Billy Bishop airport. I'm wierd though and like to land on Islands.

+1 on CYTZ, much prrrrtier than Pearson. Pearson has the advantage of all those strip joints around the runways.

Ahh, implant viewing and $9 beers. Thus the need to overnight away from base with the plane.

Personally I've never understood why this appeals to so many pilots, but it does, since I know that flight schools often use it as a selling point. Give me some quiet mowed grass to some busy asphalt any day.

I don't mind a busy airport, I'll fly into Heathrow if there's a decent reason. Having said that, I guess I've had my fill and don't really see the point in taking a light single where it's not welcome.

If you behave yourself and have a flight plan, sometimes ATC will mistake your plane for a bigger one until they notice you're only going 100knots. "Canadian, Gulf blank blank blank, say again type?" I've only been refused entry into class C once at Indianapolis International airport. Diverting to a smaller place ended up being a huge bonus during the trip.

That and I'm not really into landing fees. I guess if you're looking to spend lots of money why not just take the twin. They won't bother you then for sure and it will be more of a challenge.

Sorry I'm not being helpful. I hope someone else can be.

Landing at Pearson won't help you save money with its $100 landing fee.

About said flying school....

It sounds much better than it actually is.

I used to rent the aztec to fly it solo for some night pic time , but are they ever difficult.
5 knots cross wind and you dont go type of thing. i would get to their school in St hubert and once i show up they would cancell my booking without even giving a call before hand. and no i wasnt the only one.

after driving up and down 8 times and fly only 3 times, i got my deposit back and decided to get a float rating with the rest of the money.

there are lots of options out there, if you wanna build up time, i did about 100 hours on a 182 and paid it dry only 85$ Flight Hour. Get out there and be original.

if you wanna experience a big airport and not being pushed all over by atc, come to Cyul in the week end in the morning, like 10 am to 2 pm, and remember if you dont put you wheels down, you dont get a landing fee, so ask for a low and over. also mirabel cymx is very nice too, and very quite.

if you wanna travel far, keep in mind weather, 100 hours tt and in a single engine, alot can go wrong in the winter, and if you get stuck waiting out weather ... the school you re renting from may start charging you for a minimun use per day.
