The only time I would ever tell my current boss about a job I'm fielding is to try and posture for a raise or more days off or better working conditions if I hadn't fully decided to leave. Unless you really know your boss and know that you can give more than 2 weeks notice and not be treated like poo because of it. You gave notice? That's all anybody could ask of you.

Would she not have been better of getting her instructors rating and teaching part time at one of the local schools in the Toronto area? Dental Hygienist do very well, she need not put herself through the abuse of working at Buffalo, if she wants to fly.

I would have re-taking my private again if she was an instructor.

Aside : she could have done something like that or get into a company down here doing other duties

I wonder if she was watching the show before and said I want to be on it. who know

Good luck to her and hope she succeeds in her dream

There are some people out there who actually want a different experience in aviation than being an instructor in a city. Some of them might even be girls.

Watched last night's show. I guess these shows are a year old because they were talking about Xmas .

Was sad to see Arnie in the the show knowing that he has passed away.
That really got to me, actually a tear in my eye. don't know why but to me he seemed like a great guy and somebody who treated you right and cared about you. Could be wrong since I never met him

They said he had beaten cancer but we all know the truth. He must have been a really nice man.

Then at the end Joe and Kelly departing Is this real or just for TV.
She worked her butt off and you treat somebody like that?

Remember without people in the company the company doesn't exist.

Is he rally that much of an ass hole just because he has some ancient planes people seem to want to died for to fly?

My motto was always treat people as you would want to be treated and things will work out

Saw that new rampie girl in the background working her butt off.

Since show is over a year old wonder if she is still there

Was surprised as well at seeing Arty especially after hearing from the narrator that he had "beat" his cancer :( .

Kelly leaving was a long time coming, surprised she lasted as long as she did! If you believe the show, Joe fired her more for talking back to him and not the missed pallet? Sorry if my boss was in my face and yelling at me, calling me stupid (for no reason) and generally acting like an arrogant retard who obviously has NEVER made a mistake himself, I'd be up on an assault charge as well as being jobless!

And having only ONE guy trained on the Electra third seat? Not familiar with the Electra but couldn't a pilot or co-pilot sit there as well or is the whole thing running with only one crew? I can't believe this show is beneficial to the company! Probably scare more prospects than it attracts... Doesn't seem like the healthiest place to work, but then again, we are only seeing the "entertaining" side of it.

Hey guys,
The one message I keep seeing on this show that drives me nuts, above and beyond the poor practices that have been discussed extensively, was the fact that the editors keep hammering into viewers that this is the only way to get into the industry (not just with Buffalo but other 'north of 60' ops).

That all pilots should hack it out on the ramp for 2-3 years at minimum wage to pray for a spot on a big bird before they crack and leave. (the drama aspect of this show...)

There are lots of options if your main goal isn't to fly a DC-3/4/C46...and yet this show expects people to be impressed with the guy who goes off after 3 years on the ramp to Cathay for the S/O program. 3 years on the ramp and occasionally flying a big twin should easily open up other more progressive options within Canada.

Not knocking the S/O program, I've got a few friends in it and they are very happy - but it's not my thing.

I think that is one thing that should come with a license is operator education (or at least explain the different jobs that hire low timers - not just focus on airlines). May'be it's just as well, if pilots were actually educated before they came out of flight school Buffalo Joe would be out of business. And where would my weekly winter ENTERTAINMENT come from if they went under?

What's the reason behind the naming of the DC-3 "Summer Wages"?

I will take a stab at the question.
Back in the early '90's Buffalo had a contract to fly smoke jumpers in the Yukon with the DC-3. As most of the people involved in fire suppression are seasonal employees - i.e. summer wages - the name stuck and became the name of the DC-3.

Allot of good times were had back then.

Buffalo Airways is a meat grinder, takes people and eventually grinds them out the back end. This is a get in, get out, as soon as you can type of operation. The fact that Kelly lasted as long as she did is a testament to her work ethic. She obviously has since of loyalty to the people in the communities, Joe destroyed that over a pallet of freight, says more about McBryan then anything else.

Now if she doesn't come back, what are the bets Mikey drops a whole pile of weight, or has a heart attack. Or both!

Its named after a song by Canadian country music legend Ian Tyson, of whom Joe is a fan.

I think the DC-3 on that contract in YT was C-FGHL. "Summer Wages" is C-FPNR.

Mikey has dropped a whole pile of weight in the past year but it has nothing to do with Kelly.

What, did you think they were "live"? Or that they had just taped it last week? All of those types of shows are close to a year old after post production. Deadliest Catch is one of the faster ones out there, They crab in November and February - March and have it on TV in July. Ice Road Fuckers is also a year old by the time we get to see it too BTW.

No - it was C-GWZS.

"Summer Wages" is C-GPNR.

Hey FlyGy, I know they are not live, wasn't born yesterday
Thought they were a bit more recent.
Almost a year to go from filming to Production.
To bad when they said Arnie has beaten cancer really was not true at the end.
That is why I started this post. Seeing him there and knowing he died sort of touch my heart a bit

It has to be at least a year. Episode three, which aired Nov 21st, was showing a crew filming an Arctic Air episode which had already aired February 14th. If Ice Pilots episodes take one year to air that means Arctic Air went from filming to broadcasting in 11 weeks. (although you wouldn't know it by watching the show)

The dates just don't add up. Almost looks like they are using bits shot over 18 months ago.

I realised they were almost a year old when the first episodes aired in season 1 when there was no snow on the ground yet and it was -40 on the TV show.
wan2fly99 wrote:Almost a year to go from filming to Production.
Also, the network broadcasting the show has a say regarding when it will air...perhaps it's been sitting on their shelf for 6 months until it could be rotated into their winter schedule. Notice there is nothing on Buffalo Air while they operate during the summer months.
wan2fly99 wrote:To bad when they said Arnie has beaten cancer really was not true at the end.
At the time he had beaten it...any fan of the show knew that Arnie had suffered a relapse and had passed away in May....5 months after that episode was filmed.
wan2fly99 wrote:That is why I started this post. Seeing him there and knowing he died sort of touch my heart a bit
I don't recall seeing Arnie at all in any of the episodes this season until this Christmas episode....I suspect that the final episode of the season will include Arnie's memorial in May...but that's just a guess.
