Night Rentals in the GVRD

Post by Rowdy »

Not sure where to put this so it;s going in the General Comments area.

Just tallied up the Logbooks, am renewing my IFR and writing my A's. Turns out one of the faults of flying floats is the complete lack of night hours. I've well surpassed all the other requirements, but am stuck on the night PIC. As I plan to stay where I am for the foreseeable future, I'm going to need to get that time on my own! I've put aside a bit of coin knowing this was coming.

So I'm putting it to Avcan, as I've been out of the GA loop here in vancouver for quite some time!

Who has the best rental rates in YNJ, YXX, ZBB and YPK? Also.. anyone out there selling block time these days? Any decent partnerships? Anyone willing to lend me an airplane for a few basic night hours? I'm looking to keep the hourly cost below $100/hr and of course the less expense the better! Not interested in buying shares of an aircraft or buying one outright. I dont need THAT much time ;)

One of the down sides to getting your ATP is you have to rent a twin every 2 years and fly it around enough to get current to do a ride. That is not cheap. I waited until I was moving to multis and then I rented a 172 at night for what seemed like months but managed to put about 3 hours in the book each night - the slower you go the better. You didn't need an ATP at Borek, maybe you should wait? Maybe you'll be richer later?
Once upon a time I used to fly from Pitt Meadows to YBL, to YCD, to Victoria to YPK. Now you could add Boundary Bay and maybe even a low-and-over in YVR (no fees?) and on to YXX. Might do that on one fill? I know you like water but it depends upon how you feel about it at night on wheels. I know the little darlin' would go into auto-rough right over Mittlenatch Island every time. Talking to Comox, the guys would sleep on cots in the tower and were supposed to answer your calls but some nights they couldn't be roused (or bothered). Watch for fog late at night in YPK - unforecast, nearly got me one night - 5 more minutes and I'd still be up there.

I guess to actually answer your question - no.

Actually, to be a skipper at Borek you have to have the A's. I believe it's an insurance issue.

The cheapest rentals are going to be in the +130/hr range, which is a bit steep for bombing around to fill the logbook with some night hours. I guess I'll have to poke around at YNJ and ZBB and see.. I'm not exactly in a rush to do it. Its just one of those items on my 'To Do' list this year

Even with all your Space Shuttle, Concorde and 777 experience, you still don't have enough night time for your AA's?

I've recently seen the following:

Godspeed Aviation - YXX - Warrior and Aztec block rentals http://www.airportsenroute.com/abbotsfo ... entals.htm

AirShare - ZBB - 2 172s and a warrior - http://airsharezbb.blogspot.ca/

Golden Ears Flying Club - YPK - http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/pml/f ... 31602.html

I haven't really compared overall rates or costs for the above, but it is different than simply renting from a flight school.

I assume you're talking about the IFR ride and that you're not somewhere where you have to do IFR PPC's.

You can now do renewals in the Redbird sims.
