Learning from the TV.

Post by Nark »

I watch the discovery channel allot and I try to diversify my knowledge base. But when a show about airplanes comes on, I just have to watch.

I just saw an examination of the AA1420 crash in Littlerock, Ark. (June 1 1999).http://www.ntsb.gov/events/2000/aa1420/default.htm
They were interviewing one passenger, and she was, "Watching the rain falling horizontally, it must have been a really bad storm out there." How could she possibly see rainfall normally going 170Kts anyways?

Another genius passenger stated during final, he could no longer see the runway (assuming he saw it before). I've never been able to see the runway when I was in with the cattle in the back when I travel. For arguments sake lets say the door was open to the cockpit. The MD80 series planes as do most jets, have a nose high attitude when in the descent, thus negating a view from 15-30' in the back being able to see through the front.

Why am I stating the obvious facts that most shows on flying are so full of holes? I'm in the industry and thus have a familiarization with it. But, lets say I want to watch a show about farming. How am I to know that the info provided is accurate?

If this is my major concern tonight, I must be in good shape.
Please forgive all grammatical errors in the above post.

Media sensationalism. Somehow to the uneducated viewer, those statements are supposed to invoke emotions of imminent catastrophe. Shock value.

Absolutely. This is when you realize anything you read/see/hear in the media is probably only half true at best.

They never will let the truth get in the way of a good story!
