Seaplane Training Expiry Question

Post by missed-approach »

Hi All, Just a quick question, which I hope somebody, will be able to clarify for me.

Back in late 2007 I undertook a 50 hour Seaplane Course which incorporated the TC Floatplane Rating, out West. Unfortunately at that stage I only held a JAR PPL, so on fulfilling the TC requirements the Rating was added to a FLVC. Many moons later having gained a TC CPL I was amazed to see that the Floatrating was absent when the application was made.

On enquiring with TC, I have been told that my training has expired and the training cannot count toward a floatrating?! Is this the case as I have been researching the CARS and TC website and cannot find verification?

Oh the floatoperator whom, did the training ceases, now to exist.

Thanks in advance.

Did you add the seaplane rating to your JAR license?

I think what J31 is implying is that if the rating was not added to your JAR license, it is possible TC missed it during your license conversion. If you still have your FLVC check to see if your file number is the same as your Canadian license number. If it is, then you could argue to a licensing officer that they made a mistake. If it is different, then you have two different accounts with TC and that is why it was missed.

As far as training expiring, it does not. What does expire is your currency. TC will not give you a rating if you are not current. So, your easiest solution may be to find a float plane, do some time with someone (CPL with at least 50hrs on floats) to get the rust off, then do 5 solo circuits. You will be current again, and then person you flew with can fill out a rating form for you. Send the form to TC with $30 and you are good to go.

Hi,

Thanks for the responses. Unfortunately due to work commitments I couldn't sit the Seamanship Exam required for the JAR attachment.

However the currency issue all makes sense. Will blow off the cobwebs and try and find a suitable plane/pilot to retrain with.

Thanks Again

TC will not give you a rating if you are not current
Sort of. There is no requirement for 5 solo circuits - just
one dual flight.

CAR 421.38 applies:

http://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/civilaviation/r ... htm#421_38
421.38(b) Skill
Within the 12 months preceding the date of application for a seaplane rating, an applicant shall have successfully completed a qualifying flight under the supervision of a Transport Canada Inspector or a person qualified in accordance with CAR 425.21(6) by demonstrating the level of skill specified in the Instructor Guide - Seaplane Rating (TP12668).
