Passed the assessment and I'm now waiting for the first interview. How about yourself?

All in all I thought the assessment was neither easy nor difficult. The audio recording portion was the most difficult for me.

Cheers.

Congratulations to you both on passing the assessment! I've been really excited about this application process, and am really excited as each new step comes up! Every green light feels like a serious boost to my day!

I got my green light Friday Nov 23rd and got a call to schedule an appointment the Monday following. Shortly after the actual interview call later that week, another applicant that I have been keeping in touch with got a call to schedule an interview. Just this morning I got a green light on my panel that I have to assemble my information for the second interview, so I've been on the phone trying to assemble that chunk of material.

While speaking with the controller who interviewed me I had the opportunity to ask a few questions. Apparently it is still very early in the interview process. The gentleman I spoke with offered that I could tell anyone else who has applied for the program to be patient. There's not too much more I know beyond that, but I can tell you that I really enjoyed speaking to the gentleman who interviewed me for the couple hours we spoke, he was very warm and sharp.

If any of you are in the Vancouver area and want keep in touch about how the process is going for you, I'd enjoy creating a network for anyone going through the testing/interview process who's and you'd be welcome to join us for drinks or a hot beverage when we get together. If we all get into the training in Spring, we could even have an already established study group! Just toss me a message over the forum on how to contact you directly.

I hope you enjoy the process as much as I have so far!

Hey Kard, first off congratulations to you for passing the interview and good luck going forward! I just received my call for the first interview on Friday with the actual interview scheduled for next week. Looking forward to it!

I would most definitely be for the idea of staying in touch throughout this process. You can PM through this forum anytime.

Cheers.

I was at the Nov 14th assessment in YVR and have had my second round interview scheduled recently. I really wasn't expecting to get a phone call only a month after the first round interview considering my last time through this process it took 9 months. Just giving you guys a heads up to possibly expect phone calls.

Just got the green light from the 2nd interview, but was placed in the FSS stream - so that's the end of the line for me. Best of luck to the rest of you in the process.

Shame. I was under the impression that there is the possibility of "upgrading" from FSS to VFR or VFR to IFR -- or even backwards. Are you going to be reapplying to try to get another stream?

You may already be aware of this, but after 3 years of FSS you are able to bid for training spots in IFR / VFR courses. Additionally, they pay you your FSS wage while you train (instead of nothing for those off the street), and if you are unsuccessful in the training you are able to go back to your FSS job.

I was aware that you could bid for training spots after a few years, but I was always under the impression that if you washed out of training that was it - no going back to your old job. Thanks for the info and I'll keep that in mind. Strange though that my first time through this I was streamed for VFR, which I wanted, then the second go I got FSS.

Anyway, thanks again.

Green light. Requested VFR, placed in VFR course starting Feb 25th.. Got the prep package in the mail yesterday, have 4 weeks to get through this! Anyone else on here in the VFR course?

I'm sure you have heard in the second interview but if you haven't or you are waiting in a pool...there is an IFR course starting in May and an FSS starting in the fall sometime. They are also thinking about running a second VFR course as well this year.

That is what I was told in my telephone interview. There is no guarantees. However, if they have paid x amount of dollars to train you and you have 3 years experience at an FSS facility I would find it hard to believe that they wouldn't AT LEAST just put you on standby and let you know when an FSS position opens up...which from what I hear there is often open positions around the region. it just may require a move, which they would pay for...its not ideal, but I doubt you would be kicked to the curb.

One more thing to note is when bidding up to VFR tower, any IFR or VFR controller will be automatically higher in seniority than you, regardless of years on the job.

example: An opening comes up in CYXX

FSS with 15 years experience, VFR Controller from Langley tower (CYNJ) with 6 years exp, and an IFR controller with 4 years apply.

IFR controller with have highest seniority and will get first dibs at the job.

This is what was explained to me by a tower controller who has been working for 25 years or so. things may have changed since he last transferred, I don't know. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me, if someone knows differently, please correct me if I am wrong.

You're in a tough decision. best of luck to you, I hope it works out well for you.

I'm fairly certain that you would not need to go to a different FSS location - you would have return rights to your old job (unless you voluntarily gave them away) until the training ended one way or another.

Pretty sure you would get a job offer if there is an opening, but I think once you go to OJT out of the school, you aren't guaranteed return rights with EOCO.

Thanks! I am really glad for my aviation background with this prep package. 4 weeks would be very difficult to get a good handle on this stuff from square one. If you have a copy of 'from the ground up" it wouldnt hurt to start studying before you get a training offer just in case.
