Like the paint scheme though and flew on them a few times for the 717. That is real short haul stuff inter island.

In terms of working conditions and pay, wouldn't Jazz be the place to be.

Similarly hard to call Jazz a "Regional" airline, especially with their route network throughout all of Canada and many points deep into the USA, and the Boeing 757's they had for a while.

"Flight Global reported on September 5 that Hawaiian Airlines has signed agreements to buy two turboprop aircraft from an unnamed supplier. The airline confirmed on October 17 that it had acquired one ATR 42, with a second to be acquired the following month, and would be used to serve the islands of Molokai and Lanai."

You can take a dog and hang a sign around it's neck
saying "duck". However, that does not make the
result walk like a duck, or quack like a duck, or even
look like a duck.

It's all over for the mainline when the "regional" starts
operating aircraft without those funny prop things whirling
about - esp on long, international legs.

IMHO, Regionals fly turbo-prop aircraft short distances
(e.g. within a "region"). Unless the airline management
is trying to break the mainline union, and then we have
the unfortunate dog with the duck label.

Congrats to Westjet Encore for leading the charge for the race to the bottom. US regional style flying in Canada has finally arrived with us regional style pay.

Was there any doubt? They're betting that having Westjet painted on the side and a potential flow through will be enough to entice people to work there. Having said that if Jazz gets forced into bankruptcy I may end up there as well

The WACON at Jazz is actually pretty good. Therein lies the problem though, job security as the bar is lowered on WACON at the Regional level.

I'd actually love to fly for any one of the ones on the list, I literally just can't afford to. Not when housing in Canada is running at large multiples of income, especially low incomes like those. I know the Canadian way is to take on massive debt to make up the shortfall but I'm not going back to that. Ever.

No, money isn't everything, but unfortunately "not hating your job" isn't an accepted currency at any bank.

SR would be a better regional to point your finger at for the degradation of this industry.

I'll pick all 4. You'd have to combine the captain salaries of all 4 airlines before I'd be even remotely interested in coming back to Canada.

I stand corrected, they are both equally pathetic.

I work at Jazz. We have what I consider pretty good pay (I grossed 99k this year) good perdiems (usually 1k per month) good benefits and a good pension. I do get concerned when I see these new companies starting up with their pathetic wages. I'm just going to remain hopeful to have a job here for another 10 years and then re-assess things. No way am I going to fly a Q400 or Embrarer for 65k a year.

If I have to work for those wages, I will do something where I am home every night and it won't involve living out of a roller bag and getting up at 4:00 in a hotel.

WJE will have the best job security of the regional's.
Some magic ball you have there! WJE hasn't even started, nor a proven track record. The first 5 yrs of any new brand is hard, so lets wait and see before you taut off your favoritism. I think Jazz holds the regional security title right now, (no I don't work for them nor am affiliated with) again that can all change.
I chose my words carefully.
Personally I don't think any airline can 100% provide job security as a lot of good companies who many deemed "best job security" have folded, so choose your words more wisely next time.

/puts on flame proof rain suit

I'd work for any of them if I was qualified. I have a few hundred hours total time, but no multi ifr yet. As an instructor I flew around 500 hours and made 12K gross in 10 months so any of those would be a huge upgrade for me. Plus, I'm single with no house or kids so that really helps. I look at it as putting in time like an apprentice mechanic.

*** Note
I'm at a small flight school where we simply lack students. My hourly is on par with other flights schools, I just don't have a lot of active students because I'm in a rural area. If money was really an issue I'd be working part time on the side. My employer also partially subsidizes my housing at the airport so I don't commute to work either.

Get in the flight training forum and grab up the guys in there that want to come to Canada to get a Canadian license. Teach them well and give them their monies worth and they'll tell others from their country. Grow your business.

I'm not picking on you at all... it is just a vicious cycle that will never be broken (mostly induced by a corrupt government and twisted world economic ethics). the industry will continue to break down into nothingness. I am beginning to hate the country i love.

The bar is continuously set lower to accomodate the most desperate. Trust me by the time you're 35, you'll have a wife who's going to think that this flying thing isn't so cute anymore. Save yourself a lot of heartache by raising your standards NOW.

Neither of those actually. Pilots will always be undercutting each other as long as there is an oversupply of pilots. You are correct though, this vicious cycle will never be broken at this rate, as no body is willing to make any change.

That's only a few years away for me and with the bit of dating I've done, I'd rather have the flying job than a wife, house and kids :-p

Joking aside, yes there are of course limits. My perspective is from a flight instructor where between weather and students I just don't bill enough hours and the company isn't at fault for that. For me money is only part of the equation with working conditions, safety record and other things being important to any job choice I make. I'm not into aviation for the money and I'm fine with not living like a rock star. Money alone can't buy happiness.

Well said.

I agree, money alone doesn't make you happy; but being broke is a quick way to unhappiness from my perspective.
