Post and defend your favorite Aviation movies!!
Air America.
Featuring pre-arrested for public intoxication Bob Downey Jr. and Melvin Gibson.
Awesome soundtrack, plot with lots of laughs. What's not to like. Oh, some cool stunt flying too.

All the "northern" guys and gals will like this one. Some great shots of the Arctic in this flick and well done Canadian film.

Looks like JIN in Snow Walker.
Re: Post and defend your favorite Aviation movies!!
Great filming quality for 16R. I Work in KVNY every year so for sure I love it. Other than that:
1. Top Gun, crystal clear shooting for the time.
2. The Right Stuff, real piece of history.
3. The documentory film about the Avro Arrow.
4. Amelia.
5. Air America.

Except the 16mm NASA footage used would look dreadful on 70mm IMAX film.Beefitarian wrote:All good choices Caracrane but especially that one!Caracrane wrote:2. The Right Stuff, real piece of history.
That would be an excellent choice for digital remastering for IMAX. Unfourtunately there probably isn't enough of us to make it profit.
That is why I liked Apollo 13 so much, even though it was CGI, it captured the launch and being in space so much better than something that belonged on an EIKI projector in a 1970s Grade 11 physics class. That being said, The Right Stuff still is one of my favorite movies.
For one that hasn't been mentioned yet, 633 Squadron. The only thing that sounds better than a Merlin engine is two Merlin engines.
Re: Post and defend your favorite Aviation movies!!
Deep Throat. I know, I know, it's not not an aviation movie, but aviators have watched it........
And if I had a choice of watching a plane going down vs. Linda lovelace going down?..........

Spirit of St. Louis was on TCM yesterday. Great movie, but Airplane is the best ever!
Re: Post and defend your favorite Aviation movies!!
Not sure about favorite movie - I tend to enjoy lots of them that others pick apart due to inaccuracy or "good planes, lousy acting/plot" issues. Basically, I just love airplanes.
As for favorite response though, Lost Lake wins by a mile.

And if airplanes could actually do that, I'd love them waaaay more!Lost Lake wrote:And if I had a choice of watching a plane going down vs. Linda lovelace going down?..........

Re: Post and defend your favorite Aviation movies!!
I loved the Aviator (Leo Dicaprio version). Not really the most historically accurate movie of all time, but it was beautiful in every regard. The ladies, the aircraft, the score, the filming and acting were dynamite.
I really want to make an entrance like this at some point in my life.

Flying Leathernecks, John Wayne,
I hadn't even started school first time I say it, wanted to be a fighter pilot ever since. Worried to watch it again because might not seem as good knowing what I do now, but still think of it as my favourite, and who doesn't love John Wayne.

Re: Post and defend your favorite Aviation movies!!
My two favorites are a couple of Jimmy Stewart movies:
1) The original Flight of the Pheonix, if for nothing else than they actually built and flew the Pheonix from parts of a flying box car, simply amazing. ( unfortunately it did crash and kill Paul Mantz).
2) Stratigic Air Command, because it's just cool watching a B-36 fly six turning and four burning!! Also there is a scene where Stewart's character is called away yet again on another mission and he and his wife are having an argument about it, she says something to the effect of " why does it always have to be you that goes, why can't someone else do it for a change" I found that very profound because I have heard that from my girlfriend more than once and I'm sure many of you have also. Weather it be sixty years ago or now, military or civilian very little has changed in aviation.

Two of my favourites for the aerial scenes alone would be Battle of Britain and Memphis Belle. I know Memphis Belle was a little more "Hollywood" and the final true mission didn't actually play out as it did in the movie, but the aerial scenes were good and the intensity of the acting really gave you a glimpse of what they had to go through on those bombing runs. The fact that it's one of the few war movies my wife likes is a bonus too!
Honourable mention to The Tuskegee Airmen as well.

Good call on Battle of Britain and Memphis Belle great movies; loved Tuskegee Airmen.
