Superstitions all around..

Post by double-j »

I just finished my ride the other day and it got me thinking, does anyone have any superstitions they have? Me I don't believe in ghosts, or much of that nonsense however I have this quirk where I will not cut my hair prior to a ride or loft. Even during my intial (6 weeks) I cut my hair just prior to GS and not till I passed my PPC. (shaving doesn't count or I would have been booted out shortly after!)
I dunno if it's a Samson thing or what but I have been doing it so long it kinda seems normal.

I also know there are other superstitions in this industry. A little known fact is that a major airline in Canada does not have tail numbers that end in '4'. I guess this is due to previous incidents/accidents of earlier transport aircraft in Canada. (e.g. PWA, Gimli Glider, etc.) Cannot confirm it tho, just a well established rumour.

Does anyone else have any superstitions? Spill 'em here, here you are just another nameless, faceless quack like me. Nobody will know

Magpies, damn Magpies...
One for sorrow,
Two for joy,
Three for a girl,
Four for a boy,
Five for silver,
Six for gold,
Seven for a secret never to be told.

Luckily we don't get them in Canada, but in the UK they'd haunt me every weekend on the way to the drop zone.....

Yes there is, lots of them in Canada, I always liked them because they look like they are wearing a little tuxedo lol, but they can be a real A hole of a bird.

There is a lot more to Canada than Southern Ontario. We have lots of magpies here in BC. Never bothered me none.

And if it's a single bird it's 'cross the crow.' :)

Just passed my initial PPC about 2 hours ago! I don't have any superstitions but I usually utter Shepard's Prayer as I advance the go buttons!

I now seem to remember seeing some when I drove out to Victoria about 8 years ago. Age is making my memory fade a litte :) Looks like I now have an excuse to go back, along with Beef's Sausages and Ale.

I do not really feel totally one with an airplane until I have at least 400 hours on type. When I feel at peace with the bird, I attempt as best I can to follow an old RAF wartime tradition of peeing on the tailwheel (or nosewheel). Not that I am supersticious or anything but it brings me some relief.
Any time I get into a new airplane or one reupholstered, I christen the new seats by being the first on to fart on it.

Wantonly killing an animal you don't intend to eat... must be a prairies/redneck/ American thing. I've never really understood the urge. I wonder if it gives you good luck. It wouldn't if I was around.

I don't see anything odd about that. We don't have tail numbers in Canada. We have letters.

That was my first thought too, but perhaps it's referring to fleet number?
Photo attached was google image hit #1 for "air canada". Given that its number ends in 4, I take it AC isn't the major canadian airline in question?
