Duty free purchases in uniform?

Post by verybadman »

I am curious do your airlines restrict your privledges of purchasing duty free while in uniform? Is there a problem with this?

Do you want strangers taking a picture of you with a bottle of rum in each hand while you're in your company uniform? Everyone has a camera and everyone is a whistle blower now. Even if you're not under any obligation to your company to avoid the Duty-Free, I highly suggest using some discretion.

That's what the big, wheeled bag is for. An iPad and a lot of booze. Especially since the duty-free limit into Dubai is 4 litres. Ironic really, a muslim country and you can bring in five bottles of wine (750ml) or four litres of vodka/whiskey/etc on every trip but in a good liberal progressive free country like Canada, it's....one litre.

No wonder there are so many drunks in the desert...

Do it all the time, Canada and abroad. You even get a crew discount in most places.

Good to go here to, and if I'm in a rush and can't browse in the terminal, my company will sell it to me on the plane.

Unless the bottle is open and your lips are wrapped around it, my company (and from a Muslim country) has no prohibition on purchasing liquor at Duty Free while in Uniform. In fact, for us, it is almost SOP to stop in once a week and get our 10% discount.

LMAO!!!

Agreed. I dont see a problem with it but apparently my company does. Its just one of the few remaining perks of the industry. God knows I havent seen a Filet Mignon in the flight deck for a decade.

I mostly get smiles when I've been seen stuffing 12 king cans of Heineken into my suitcase in AMS! :D

Yeah I do it all of the time, in Asia and get a discount! I usually got a discount in the US airports too, but never in Canada.

I've never had a problem at any airport or with any of the airlines I flew with.

I always use to bring 17 back, the allowance is 8.5l Ever try Amstel, very good beer also?. The best deals are always at the local grocery stores in my opinion, sometimes at the airport with a decent discount but rarely.

There used to be a custom where whenever an aircraft stopped over at SNN the captain would receive a free bottle of Scotch from the duty free store.

In Lanzarote & Fuerteventura the duty free van would pull beside the airplane and ask the crew if they wished to purchase Duty at a significant discount. In Tenerife we would slip into the Terminal and purchase duty free there....air crew discounted of course!

I frequently buy duty free in uniform, I just place it in my wheely bag ASAP. My company has no issue but I feel it's best to limit my exposure all the same.

Slightly off topic here but I remember a vacation in a Dominican resort a few years back. I was at the lobby bar and noted the arrival of a Russian crew in full Uniform take over half the bar for a few beers. Probably normal in Russia but I got a chuckle nonetheless.

Unfortunately, for some strange reason..we can no longer buy duty free in Cancun from the airport...The authorities won't allow it..go figure!! As airline crew, they probably lost their best customers...

At least they didn't have to ask for the "airline" discount...
