A photo in a similar thread on another forum ,of the aircraft in question after the event, shows the canopy still attached....

Right.Local reports said that man who died was an experienced pilot who was being trained to fly the plane, which he had recently purchased.

The article I read (awesome journalism) had an image of a C-177RG, and I was really wondering what you'd have to do to fall out of it if the windscreen came off.

I understand that neither the pilot or the instructor had their harness done up....Now that is quality instruction! Good job
The balance of my post has been edited due to insanely humerous , but totally insensitive comments regarding the possabiity of why both would have their seat belts off and the plane suddenly take a nose dive, as well as speculation about tweeting on the freefall..
