400 views and not a single reply? Bob ran a great little air service. Back in the mid-late 90s SL was CP there and I did a bit of contract flying on the PA31-350 for him. Bob gave alot of guys/gals their first right seat in a twin and should be remembered for that. I didnt know he had become ill. He was still fairly young at 62. Sad news.

I remember him, we did our CPL trgn same time at MFC 1973-74 time frame. I certainly wasn't on a buddy/buddy basis but did run into him on occasion during the usual aviation meanderings. We remembered each other, I do know he did a stint with EPA but but it wasn't what he enjoyed as I remembered in a conversation YHZ many years back. He wanted to be his own person and as I recall during our initial training days he had an independent spirit which served him very successfully.bmc wrote:What an impressive man. I believe back in the mid 80s he was with Soundair running its Cessna 310 bag run in Winnipeg.

(on an earlier Topic) was as follows:
Very sad news - I spoke with him a month ago after hearing of his illness and despite the prognosis he maintained a resolutely cheerful and optimistic outlook. He was looking forward to an eye activated computer to go with his speech machine - and he regaled me with memories of good times long past.
Bob was a Prince of a man - always ready to lend a helping hand. He loved the airline
business and it was gratifying to see him build one of his own. 'Per ardua ad astra' might heve been his motto and he persevered until he had achieved his goal.
We will all be the poorer for his passing - guys like him do not come along very often. He will be missed by many.
Sic itur ad astra - thus you shall go to the stars. (Virgil)

Robert Montgomery Bateman
1950-2013
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Robert M. Bateman at the age of 62. Bob was born in Thetford Mines, QC and was a long time resident of Charlottetown. Beloved son of the late John (Jack) Stanley Bateman and Gladys Muriel (nee Porter). He is survived by his two sons, Scott (Christine) and Adam. Loving grandfather to Mara, Mateo and Maxim, and cherished husband of 37-years to Carolyn (nee Saunders). He leaves his three brothers William ‘Jack’ (Velma), Peter (Dianne), and James (Brenda), and two brother-in-laws David (Wendy) and Brian (Cathy).He will be greatly missed by his nephews and nieces: Steve, Wendy, Erin, Rob, Heather,Brenden, Dawn, Stephanie, Jennifer, Kathleen, Colin, Jonathan and Joanna.
Bob was an accomplished pilot and distinguished business person, with over 35 years experience in the airline industry. In 1990, he started Prince Edward Air Ltd., which he grew from a one-employee, one-aircraft Charlottetown-based endeavour to the largest Atlantic Canadian-based airline, with over 130 employees, over 20 aircraft, and offices in Charlottetown, Moncton, Halifax, and St.John’s.
Outside of business he played an important role in the community, especially as an advocate for those with Autism and for armed forces reservists on Prince Edward Island. With wife Carolyn, he helped to found the Stars for Life Foundation for Autism, a non-profit organization that provides lifelong living and learning opportunities for those with ASD. The Stars for Life home and resource centre opened it doors in 2011. Bob was also honoured by the PEI regiment by being made an Hon. Lt. Col.and was PEI chair of the Canadian Forces Liaison Council, a role in which he helped advocate for the important role that reservists play in Canada’s defence. In addition to being a proud Rotarian and member of the Charlottetown Chamber of Commerce, Bob served on many boards including the Charlottetown Airport Authority, Board of Governors for JA and the QEH Hospital, to name just a few.
His efforts and accomplishments did not go without recognition. He received a Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Award (2012), was named the Transportation Person of the Year by the Charlottetown Chamber of Commerce (1998), Prince Edward Air was named Service Provider of the Year by Canada Post Corporation (2003), he received the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award (2004), he was inducted into the Junior Achievement PEI Business Hall of Fame (2005), and was made a lifetime member of the Canadian Owners and Pilots Association (2012).
Beyond his hard work building a trusted and successful business, numerous accomplishments, and tireless volunteer work, Bob was a dedicated and caring husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend to many. Family and friends were foremost in his life, and he spread joy and happiness through his positive outlook and sharp wit. He will be sadly missed and his memory always cherished.
Visitation will be held on Friday from 2 to 4 P.M., and 7 to 9 P.M. at Belvedere Funeral Home (175 Belvedere Ave., Charlottetown, PE). Services will be held in his memory at 11:00 A.M., on Saturday, at St Paul’s Anglican Church, 101 Prince St., Charlottetown, PE.
The family would like to thank the "Friends of Bob" for their ongoing support of the family, and the QEH - ICU, PEI Home Care and their volunteers, and Dr. Des Colohan for their wonderful medical support.

I met Bob years ago while doing some flying out of Charlottetown. Was always very helpful and a gentleman to work with. He will be missed.
