Halifax Commuters or Porters
Hey, just looking for any people in the know who are willing to comment on what a person could expect living in YHZ. Is it currently a port or would you have to commute? Also, any prediction on how Encore might affect the situation for those looking to live in YHZ in the future?

Westjet is going to a Base model in the next few month , so the chances of joining the Halifax port are not looking very good at this moment....

If you want lots of stress in your life, and want to be miserable... commuting is a great way to make that happen. Take it from a former commuter!
Seriously, my life has improved a hundredfold, once I decided to move to where the job is. With a wife and little ones at home, my family life has also never been better. Just ask anyone who commutes, what it's like on the 20th when the sked comes out... and you have to tell your wife how bad it is THIS month with all the time spent in the back of the airplane going back and forth to your base, and not getting paid to do it, having a crashpad, while paying your mortgage back home... not to mention all the nights at the crash pad having to leave the day before, cause you got an early morning check in on day one. The list goes on!
You have to figure what's best for you and your family... a big house with a huge yard on Grand Lake, and being gone 22 days a month, or a small house in suburbia, and being home pretty much every night, working only 14-16 days... and being available, (since I'm not always gone) to get the occasional juicy OT shift.
In the end, it's all about what is best for you and your family...You have to make a decision, and be prepared to live with the consequences (and subsequently not Bitch to everybody about the hardships of commuting).
Best of luck with your decision!

I commute YYZ-YYC (hopefully not much longer). It can be stressful for sure, and it seems that the loads are getting worse and worse every month making the commute even harder. If you are planning on staying in YHZ, you will want to be in YYZ whenever that base opens, it will still be a hard commute but not as hard as YHZ-YYC.
As a commuter you will find Flica to be your new best friend.
Good Luck!

Another change to the YYZ pairing dynamic: I'm willing to bet most of the pairings originating out of YYZ will be North/South one day pairings... which may not be exactly what you're looking for in a commuter's sked. Lots of changes coming, not sure how it will all shake out.

I have been at WJ for many years. I am a commuter. I have a wife and kids. I am not miserable not stressed out. In 8 years I have missed one birthday, one Valentines day and one Christmas Day. My wife and kids are very happy with my schedule. I am gone about 10/12 nights a month on average. I have missed one days work due to commuting and DP was good about it. I lost the credit which was fair.
If you can avoid commuting, by all means do so. Commuting sucks.
That being said......
Life is not what you make, it's what you make of it.

So is there any speculation on what encores presence might be like on the East Coast in say 5 years?

In 5 years you will probally see WJ pulling out of the smaller markets in the maritimes and being replaced with the Q. Which will mean lower wages for the CSA's and ground crew. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Q doing the eastern triangle.
