There obviously should be a regulation requiring that any Giraffe within an airfield boundary must wear a reflective vest.

I feel sorry for the giraffe too, but there are a lot of animals around these strips. I hit an impala with the Caravan in Tanzania and one of the other pilots hit a zebra with the 206. I've also come close to running into a variety of other animals. I remember one take off a kudu ran across the runway... he was just a blur. Had he been a little slower or another 50 feet my way, it would have been ugly. You can fly overhead and buzz the animals to get them to clear but there's no guarantee they won't dart across last second. And sometimes you don't even see them until you touchdown.

Obviously you haven't flown in these parts? Nature coloured these animals the way they are for a reason - to blend in with their surroundings. These airports typically have no set boundary or fence, and animals are free to come and go. It's not unusual for them to hang about on the runway.

It's a bloody giraffe, mate. The head would be above the horizon while the airplane was in cruise!

According to ASN, it happened on takeoff:

Can't seem to go straight to ASN page, hence the webcache URL

LOL. I guess it does sound more like I'm explaining a fender bender I had while driving doesn't it. :)

Oh, Doc... it is OK to admit you're wrong you know.

If the accident was on takeoff, the pilot likely tried to clear the animal and couldn't make it. I suppose he could have cut the power and went off in the tulips. Of course, maybe he would have rolled off the end into a hippo pond. Who knows? The point, like KK7 explained, is that there is an abundance of animals around these strips. Fencing is not allowed because they are in National Parks and that would be bad for the poor animals I guess. They need to roam free. This is a real danger that pilots are faced with on nearly every landing they make in these parts of the world.

Here's another from the ramp at Ruaha strip in Ruaha National Park. :D

Doc,

The accident happened while the aircraft was still on the ground. Do you think it could fly after the damage to the wing from the animal? Even a few feet? On the ground, there is rarely a need for a seeing eye dog.
