Insurance Minimums for Skydiving
I was speaking with a skydive operator and was informed that his insurance provider states a minimum of 300 PIC to fly for his operation. Is this typical across the industry without having to buy your type rating?

Uh, last time I checked there was no typebuy your type rating?
rating required for a C182 or C206 (typical
entry-level skydive aircraft).
I can't believe you need a type rating to fly
a C208, but I guess anything is possible in
Canada, where more paperwork is always
better paperwork.

I was actually referring to the particular operation that offers an opportunity to buy your checkout and possibly get a non paying pilot job.

this feels troll-ish... but I'm bored, so I'll bite...Anvil Pilot wrote:I was actually referring to the particular operation that offers an opportunity to buy your checkout and possibly get a non paying pilot job.
Anybody who feels the need to pay for a checkout for a NON PAYING job is an idiot. I suspect we all know which dropzone you are referring to. I also think I can tell you this is NOT going to help your career, other employers (you know the good kind, that pay you) will hopefully shun you after doing something so degrading as to pay to work for free. There are no shortcuts, some people get lucky, most do not, in a couple years you will have hours no matter how you start.... don't be stupid.

Thanks, and I get that part about buying your way in.
Any comments on the original question of a 300 pic minimum to fly for skydiving?
Thanks...

Joe has probably negotiated has that "open pilot"
clause in his insurance, to lower his premiums.
That's just a guess, though - why don't you phone
him up and ask him?

Re: Insurance Minimums for Skydiving
Do other operators require 300 hours PIC for a regular paid pilot on a similar aircraft, (c182). I get the general position everyone has of the free-pilot concept. Let's talk about other skydive opportunities and their req's.
Re: Insurance Minimums for Skydiving
When I flew skydivers (not for the operator in question) the minimum experience the insurance company wanted to see was 300 TT as opposed to 300 PIC, that was for the 182 in 2010. On a side note DO NOT pay a certain DZO north of Toronto for a "Type rating" on a 182 there is no such thing and it degrades our entire profession. If you find the right DZ you can make upwards of 2500/mth with a place to stay. Feel free to PM me if you want to know anything else.

You definitely do not need 300pic to fly skydivers. My total time was less than that when I started.

Re: Insurance Minimums for Skydiving
Another Ontario DZ asks for 25 on type for their operation. Again, negotiating with insurance to bring the number to 25 on type. Although unfortunately I don't know many that have 182/206 time. This disqualifies many before even considering their resume...

You don't need a type rating for a 208. You only need a PPC if flying it IFR, if you are flying strictly day VFR it is no different than a 206.Colonel Sanders wrote:Uh, last time I checked there was no typebuy your type rating?

Re: Insurance Minimums for Skydiving
Most DZ's I spoke with want 300TT with time on a C182 or C206 if possible. It's an amazing experience and a good way to get hours as a low timer as companies expect turn over every year.
