Seriously, I don't GARA what the price at the pump is. I fill up like once a month, and now that it is biking season I'll fill up even less. For how cheap the Americans get everything... you sure don't see evidence of their higher quality of life because of it. That's because what they don't spend on consumer goods gets eaten up by other things... like every time they go to a hospital.

Everyone complains about the price of gas... yet I still see tons of people driving V8 SUVs alone two hours a day, operating huge wake boats, sleds, quads, dirt bikes, etc etc... even though the price has more that doubled in ten years. But paying the gas to operate a four cylinder four place aircraft for 50 hours ($3500) always seems to be the crux of aircraft ownership. Most people don't even put a quarter of that into their aircraft.

If I was giving the avgas away for free, pilots would still complain about it. I used to give a discount for flying club members but they complained incessantly about getting a discount. There are people who are going to fly regardless of the cost, and those who use cost as an excuse not to. We all make choices on what's important.

Diesel in Switzerland is CAD 2.22 a litre. Diesel in France is CAD 1.80 a litre. Since we live 4 km from the French border, I tank up in France. The French government subsidizes the price of diesel.

I couldn't tell you avgas sells for in either place. As for the notion of mogas in airplanes, the response I keep getting is it causes vapour lock, despite STC' being available in the USA since 1982.

AFAIK vapour lock is only a problem if you use winter mogas in summer. Otherwise you shouldn't have any problems.

I spend about 3000$ a year on membership, tows, insurance, gas, etc. etc. for the gliding I do, I put in a few hundred hours a year.
I also drive a TDI Jetta which helps save a huge amount of gas. Currently $70/55L gets me about 1300 km highway in the summer.

I'm sorry, I could not disagree more.

My WV Golf TDI does not have higher maintenance costs than comparable gasoline powered cars, and at 5-6 l/100km it saves me money regardless of how much or how little I drive. That does not include generally higher durability of a diesel engine compared to a gasoline car engine.

I only wish that I could get diesel engines for other cars and a small airplane.

It might not cost more now, but it will eventually. The gas engine in my 30 year old Volvo has half a million klicks on it and doesn't burn any oil, while I've seen many TDis 20 years its junior blowing blue (not black... but plenty of that too) out the tail pipe. So much for durability.

Plus, How much extra did your TDi cost to buy compared to something equivalent with a gas engine? How much did it cost to finance? How much is it depreciating? Sure they might command more used, but not enough to recoup the initial cost..... unless you can realize the savings by driving it lots.... like over 30,000 km a year.

I spend less than $1000 a year on fuel for my car, so I'm pretty sure a TDi wouldn't help me.

We used to live less than a km from the Syrian border where government subsidized diesel was 3USD a tank, as opposed to 30USD on our side. But lord help you if the Syrians ever caught you leaving the country with their diesel...

I drive a 2011 Nissan Xtrail diesel. I do a lot of highway with it. I am coming up on two years of ownership and we have 82,500 km on it. I am averaging 6.8 l/100 km. Not bad for a medium sized 4x4.
