what if you ask for your PTR and they refuse to give it to you?
Then it's your birthday. Call Enforcement. They
will slice and dice the FTU for contravening CARs.

FTU's CANNOT hold onto your PTR. And, you
should NEVER leave your personal logbook at
the FTU. No reason to. Get them both signed
and up to date frequently.
For reference the Colonel is talking about CAR 405.33(2)
405.33 (1) A person who conducts flight training for the issuance of a private pilot licence, a commercial pilot licence or a flight instructor rating - aeroplane or helicopter shall, for each trainee, maintain a pilot training record that meets the personnel licensing standards.

(2) On request from a trainee receiving training for the purposes referred to in subsection (1), the person responsible for maintaining the trainee's pilot training record shall

(a) certify the accuracy of the entries; and

(b) provide the trainee with the record.
Now, lots of students let their instructors get away with (b) without saying anything, so I encourage you people to start phoning transport. Chase those f@ckers down in their first right seat. Ideally it would be funny for them to have to explain to their new boss why they have a CARS violation on their record. To this end, always sound very interested in where your instructor has applied to in case they go missing. You may have to do a bit of sleuthing, but its not that hard to phone up and talk to the HR lady and ask about their new employees. Keep a note of that number when you go to file your case with transport.

Like I said before, violations of CAR 405.33 is the quickest thing TC moves on, when they catch wind, not sure why, maybe because the case is usually open and closed, so it gives them a sense of accomplishment.
You guys are far to afraid of a pansy-@ssed
flight instructor and his CFI, strutting around
the ramp like Tom Cruise and Goose
Come on, you got to give them something, if they can't strut around like Maverick and Goose, who can they strut around as?

Back to the mushy stuff:

Lots of people have unpleasant experiences
during flight training. I wrote a note about
this common problem:

Nice article :smt023

Curious about this though:
Don’t leave until the security guards toss you out the front door, post your photo around the building and warn you that you will be charged with trespassing if you show up again, which is pretty much what happened at my last place of full-time employment, but that’s another story.

Change FTU's, immediately. I agree with CS on this completely. When I was in my advanced training, I got experienced instructors with actual line experience. Some don't think this is important. I think it enhances the training.

I was trained both on the flight test requirements, and how it is done in the commercial environment. Some might disagree with my insisting on an experienced class whatever, but my reasoning is experiences like what is described. Which I have found is more likely, that it is the newly minted instructors that think they now know everything, which is really irritating.

Maybe my experience is atypical, but for the most part the 2 multi thousand hour instructors I had fro advanced were both knowledgable, professional and pretty patient with my bumbling and fumbling at times.

My opinion/in this order: (1) Perhaps talking to the CFI or owner about this would be beneficial. They should ensure the quality of training and customer satisfaction in this situation (not saying that the instructor did anything right about his teaching methods). (2) Switch instructor's (3) Switch to a different FTU.

This would be the normal way of going about things. However if (1) did not seem to get anywhere I would go directly to (3).
