Air Canada has been ranked the best airline in North America in an international survey of more than 12 million air travellers, only a year and a half after filing for bankruptcy protection.
The country's largest carrier emerged from protection last fall and has just announced its plans for more routes and new, smaller jets.
The annual survey was conducted by Skytrax, a U.K.-based independent research firm, between June 2004 and May 2005. Travellers rated the airlines on 35 aspects of customer satisfaction and the survey is considered the benchmark in rating passengers' opinions on world airlines.
"We are honoured to be acknowledged by travellers around the world as the best airline in North America," said Montie Brewer, president and CEO of Air Canada, in a prepared release.
"I am incredibly proud of our employees and I congratulate them on this positive recognition of their efforts to provide our customers with an all-round quality travel experience -- bar none."
Star Alliance, of which Air Canada is a founding member, was also ranked best airline alliance.
