HKG

Noticed on Flightradar24 the AC B777 do the polar route to HKG from YYZ but return appears to be over Alaska, NT then into YYZ. This the normal routes or is it due the usual(winds, payload, fuel alt etc).

thats Ac015 and 016, I take those flights fairly often and noticed the variability so i asked a friend who flies that route for AC and he told me it varies a lot based on temperature, winds etc. apparently sometimes its actually too cold!

Strong jet streams over the pacific make it economical to fly Asia to Canada over the pacific. Going the other way it's a shorter flight to go over the pole, but extreme cold temperatures (fuel freezing) and excessive radiation from space may occasionally force a reroute from that.

The bad part about flying east bound over the pacific is the almost inevitable turbulence off Japan.

Another interesting route that I didn't know AC flew and that is YYZ to Santiago then over to Buenos Aires, they do that all one trip with same crew. Sounds that would be a fun layover..........

The crew for the route operates YYZ-SCL then has a layover, the next day the operate SCL-EZE and return to layover again in SCL. They then operate the SCL-YYZ leg the next day.

Jeez.......... looks like AC runs all over the place - good on'em!!! :)

Here's another. Lets say I was a newly minted B767 Capt(dream on!!!) released to line fly after all requirements( ppc, route etc) where ever that airplane goes. Is it a requirement to have any specific route training to destinations I have never been in to like that YYZ-SCL-EZE trip

The seasoned, well adjusted, over experienced F/O will be only too happy to take you by the hand (not literally) and show you the ropes both enroute and on layover..... :?

Don't forget the Space Forecast as well. Too much radiation from the sun and alternative route farther south must be found.
