This video is from CYQS St. Thomas, ON during the Wings N' Wheels airshow in 2009. The main runway is 5050' X 100' and the C-17 uses about half of the length. I was working for the airport at the time and went out to do a FOD check before the Snowbirds did their show as they were the next act. Glad we did as the first 600' of runway lights and threshold lights were obliterated due to the high thrust. I have a half melted runway light lens cap as a souvenir paperweight.
P.S. St. Thomas is having it's bi-annual airshow on June 29 and 30th. Check out http://greatlakesinternationalairshow.ca/ for more information!

Here's a DHC-5 on our 3000 x 75 runway. Length wasn't a problem, but width was.....

Re: Big planes, small airports.
Big(ish) airplane... No airport.
Oh wait, maybe this is an airport.

Re: Big planes, small airports.
Took a C-130 in and out of CFB Borden. Does that count!
Re: Big planes, small airports.
Flyboy 757,
Don't know whether it counts or not.
Ummm a Cessna 130 in Borden... No don't think so..
A Herc into Borden... You should snag the GPS on that plane...
Doesn't sound too reliable...
Oh wait, you mean you actually wanted to land there???

Wow - some pretty nice technique there, particularly the big-time flare after he'd planted the mains.EA757 wrote:Big(ish) airplane... No airport. Oh wait, maybe this is an airport.

Re: Big planes, small airports.
YUP, actually wanted to land there. To depart had to open the rear ramp and back up til the loadmaster stopped us with the mains at the edge of the asphalt! Remember...runway behind you is no good..........EA757 wrote:Flyboy 757,

While an ATCer at YED working the Sunday day shift had a civil plane land and taxi clear. When he saw all the C-130`s on the ramp, realized...whoops...wrong airport. Taxied back to the rwy and took off. Never a word from him. Turned out he was looking to land at YEG, 20 mi south! In those days all 3 Edmonton airports, YEG,YXD and YED had the same runway orientation 11/29. He eventually found YEG safely and sent an apology thru the tower guys at YEG

Re: Big planes, small airports.
I remember flying into Melville Hall in Dominica was pretty tight considering an overrun would put you off a cliff into the atlantic. At the time they were running 727's in there.

Aerodynamic braking...when you have a slick/soft surface like grass, wheel brakes on something that big aren't as effective...YYZSaabGuy wrote:Wow - some pretty nice technique there, particularly the big-time flare after he'd planted the mains.
Re: Big planes, small airports.
Is it just me or did it seem like there was a significant amount of the landing roll with the plane skidding sideways (nose left, towards the right side of the screen)?

BIIIIG plane!

I think the DC-10 into Carp could beat that one. After all they had 5,600 feet at QRA. Carp is 3,900 feet.Redneck_pilot86 wrote: Hard pressed to beat this one.

Re: Big planes, small airports.
These are some really impressive landings. They got me thinking, how many of these were hand flown? With no auto thingys or NAV aids and what not? Most responders here seem equally impressed at how well these landings turned out, but over in another thread some Bananna man poster gets a new one ripped because he was talking about hand flying aproaches in some big jumbo jet. I don't quite understand you pilot folk. Now I really don't know anything about airplanes so please correct me if just have no clue at all. were any electronic gizmos used to land these big planes in small airports?

nopilot,
The "electronic gizmos" you refer to would most likely be Autoland. Autoland is only possible onto a runway served by an Instrument Landing System (ILS), which because of high costs and low demand means that most of these smaller airports usually would not have it. Carp doesn't have one, nor does Johannesburg Rand airport. You are looking at videos of hand-flown landings.
I won't even go into explaining the procedural complications of conducting an Autoland or why we are unable to simply do an Autoland on any airport which happens to have an ILS (and no, we don't just push the "Land" button either), but unless you happen to be flying into some very foggy international airport (in other words, Low-Visibility Procedures), there is an excellent chance that the aircraft was being hand-flown the last few feet til the Dunlops kiss the pavement. In some cases even then it was being hand-flown, if the aircraft is fitted with a Heads-Up Display (HUD). So if the touchdown was a crowd pleaser, it was probably either the Captain or the First Officer, and not "George"

Don't worry, we're a strange and diverse group that don't understand each other. Also we're typically competitive and like to think our way of doing something is the best one.I don't quite understand you pilot folk.
You should see us fight about outfits. I like my big wrist watch and Rayban Aviator sun glasses, even though I only wear them to fly. Many pilots who can't afford those make fun of them.
I bought that stuff before I learned to fly and more importantly in my case got married. AKA was not poor yet. Back then I didn't work as hard but got paid, so I would buy things like fancy sunglasses, a house, Motorcycles, pants, the list of luxuries goes on and on.
Re:
Don't forget flight suits and Captains shirts complete with epaulettes and stripes. That's guaranteed to get things going. (I never understood the flightsuit thing, they are comfortable and amongst other things avoid "pilots crack" when getting in and out of some types of airplanes)Beefitarian wrote:... PS: Beef you should be writing a humour column in your local newspaper. Your take on life is both thought provoking and smile creating!

I have a true flight suit story. Back in the mid 90s I was very active in CASARA. For a little while flight suits were in vogue because they are fire resistant, comfortable and have lots of pockets. During a SarEx a group of us took a member of the military to Costco. I chose not to wear a flight suit since I had my other pilot costume which at the time included tanker boots and an MA-1 jacket. I was not aware at the time that by shaving my head I happened to complete my aryan skin head ala American History X ensemble.
So here we round the corner at Costco with our soon to be tax money provided office supplies. When this teenager spots us and his jaw drops. Fortunately he didn't have a kosher hot dog or he would have dropped it. All he could say was, "Whoa! Are you guys Astronauts?!"
The rest of the group decided to ignore him but he followed us around and kept asking. We quickly explained "We're search and rescue volunteers." But he just asked the same question.
I miss that jacket.

Re: Big planes, small airports.
During our hot summertime SAREx's, we used to wear the beige flight suits, with nothing underneath.
