I do hope everyone is staying safe though!

Re: Flooding YYC.
This flooding is crazy! I've never seen the river so wide and deep. The park where I learned how to bike is completely submerged! It's one of those days that I am happy that I live at the highest point in the city far from the river!
Re: Flooding YYC.
I have seen some wild pics and video from friends in Lethbridge and Crowsnest Pass, but Calgary and the nearby foothills look to be getting it much worse. Stay safe!
Re: Flooding YYC.
Just seen on CBC that the Saddledome is up to the 8th row in water..

It's getting really bad. The military has just showed up with a bunch of troops, trucks and helicopters. Over 100,000 have been evacuated and we are starting to get notices to boil out water before we drink it...
Stay safe everyone

Not for the giraffes and elephantsThe zoo being on an island in the river is flooding. That is fairly serious also

Re: Flooding YYC.
Sending good thoughts and support to all the people in YYC affected by this flooding!
We are in Northern Sask and not immune to all this rain either. It`s the worst I`ve seen it here in the 12 years ive lived here on and off. I live on an acreage and our driveway is under 3 ft of water at the culvert and rising into our yard area and creeping closer and closer to the house. We need a break in all this rain before things will start to change. We finally got a break for a couple days this week and the water receeded...but now after a day of steady rain here yesterday and today, its back to the levels it was.
Stay safe and on high ground in YYC! Ive seen some pics of the Saddledome, wow!

My aunt and uncle were rescued from their roof by a helicopter last night in High River (aptly named) as the water was rising so rapidly they didn't have the chance to leave. Hoping for the best for everyone around YYC and everyone affected! Stay safe all!!

There is lots of good information on this site for returning home to evacuated communities, with links to what areas are re-opened, route maps, etc.

Re: Flooding YYC.
It was a cold winter/spring with a deep snow pack. Snow line was very low for this time of the year. The heavy rain melted it all at once. The Rogers Pass still had well over a foot of snow in the shade when I drove through it in earlier in the month.MUSKEG wrote:And global warming hysteria start in 3-2-1 go

We'll save the climate change hysteria for the next time if the "100 year flood" starts to happen more than every 100 years. Hope not.
Het BTW anyone fly over inglewood on apch to 34 lately? I'm guessing ATC won't let any news choppers in there since none of the photo or video covers that area. I have yet to see a pic east of fort calgary except shots of the wier taken from the ground... If you could throw up a pic or two I'd appreciate it.

But nobody would listen.

Hang in there Calgary and flooded Southern Alberta. Calgarys strong civic spirit will help in coming out of this, they'll be stronger than before.
I wonder how many feet over the bank the river is, and how many meters of concrete berm would be needed to prevent /reduce the next one. Probably not do-able...
-----------------------
Airport flooded?
Haven;t listened to the news....talked briefly to a flight crew, said their crew room was flooded,...maybe just backed up storm system....

from Wikipedia:co-joe wrote:We'll save the climate change hysteria for the next time if the "100 year flood" starts to happen more than every 100 years.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/100-year_floodA common misunderstanding exists that a 100-year flood is likely to occur only once in a 100-year period. In fact, there is approximately a 63.4% chance of one or more 100-year floods occurring in any 100-year period.
I live in view of the mountains and I too noticed a greater snowpack than is normal for this time of year. Rainfall amounts like this I've observed before. The snowpack may have been the aggravating factor.

If a global rollout of nuclear power were to occur the overall climate impact would be reduced.MUSKEG wrote:And global warming hysteria start in 3-2-1 go
According to Munich Reinsurance company the fingerprint of extreme weather is already present in the North Americas.
It's quite simple really, warming air holds more water vapour. So more precipitation as snow and rain. I wouldn't be surprized if Calgary floods again. Better to rebuild on high ground than repairing the damage.

Re: Flooding YYC.
Maybe...until the next Chernobyl, Three Mile Island, or Fukishima...or one far worse than those 3 were. Nuclear power is not the answer nor is it the future.scm wrote:If a global rollout of nuclear power were to occur the overall climate impact would be reduced.MUSKEG wrote:And global warming hysteria start in 3-2-1 go
