Need clarification on these answers from a test prep

Post by JungianJugular »

From pilotexams.com - PPL Practice Exam

#1:

Image

"Aerodrome forecasts ... are issued at least four times daily .. the normal validity period is 24 hours."
- p.167, FTGU

#2:

Image

"The speed and direction of forecast surface winds with a sustained speed of atleast 20 kt are indicated by wind barbs and an associated windspeed value."

- TC AIM MET 3.3.10 p. 127

Am I blind? I don't see one on that GFA in the SW corner of Alberta. Had to guess on that answer.

#3:

To calculate the TAS in this scenario, my understanding is you need a CAS value. Help on this question? Where did I go wrong?

"Convert the indicated airspeed (IAS) to calibrated airspeed (CAS) using the airspeed correction table in your Airplane Flight Manual."

- p. 200, FTGU

#1. TAF CYMJ 040445 040517 ...

First bunch of number is issued date time: 04th of the month, 0445 Z
Second bunch of numbers is validity period: 04th of the month, from 0500Z to 1700Z. Therefore a 12hr validity period.

#2. I don't see any wind barbs either. Are you sure you have the correct GFA?

#3. I think the general rule of thumb is IAS decreases from TAS 2kts per 1000 feet. So you start with an indicated airspeed and work backwards. (10000 ft = 20kt decrease in IAS.)

Regarding #2, the GFA I posted is the one that was linked to the question.

Regarding #3, under Airspeed Indicator Errors of FTGU it's mentioned adding 2% to IAS for every 1,000 feet of pressure altitude, so TAS=192 knots? I get a similar value with the flight computer w/ temperature.

I suspect that there is a typo in the question for #3. I think that the temperature should be minus 20. This would make more sense at 10,000 feet as well. This does give an answer of 180 kts.

For question 2, what are the comments associated with boxes C and D? Often times wind conditions will be noted in them.

20C at 10k feet? Wheeeewww. That's a 40+ scorcher at ground level. Agree that book likely forgot the minus sign.
There are typos in this test prep books, but usually only one, maybe two. With that said it's easy to think that every wonky question that you can't figure out to be a typo when in reality they are just trying to throw you a stupid grammar curveball like they do on the TC exams.

I've found a few errors on that site too but it's mostly Ok. If in doubt, I go dig through the online CARs or the online AIM manual. Just having a set of questions makes for a handy refresher drill and it's probably good practice anyway when I have to double check something on the TC sites. The page numbers for FTGU are useless for me since I have an older edition of the book.
