Rudderbug,

I was looking through these pics and came across your CCJ Beaver pic back in feb. When and where was that taken?

I remember that beaver running out of YKL in the mid 90s working for a small mineral exploration company. We ended up out looking for him one day, April 26,1997 to be exact. Had to pull the logbook for that. He was 6 hrs overdue for arrival back into YKL so off we went. By the time we got back he was putting her to bed. Wx had gone to sh#t so he plunked down and made some tea up wait the weather out. Guess he had his radios off while he was flying because we were calling every 5 min but no joy, except to see him safely back in YKL.

Cheers

ETTW;

That's my old friend Georges, a geologist/pilot who's been flying that Beaver for decades. I think the aircraft just been sold but Georges might still be flying it for the new owner.

I'll give him a call and find out.

He certainly remembers that day!

Cheers

The weather back in May was awful, two days later the 208 was back at the airport and the main docks were trying to float away.

haha Perhaps, Unfortunately the dam Stewart River is so silty the cleaning job would only last a day or two. On the plus side the silt seems to "tighten up" the floats.

The biggest one soo far: working on getting all my Canadian paperwork done (flying licenses & migration). In february I'm coming over. Beware !
In the mean time, I'm teaching in Europe. One of my advanced students wanted to fly in the Alps, that's where the picture is from.

That looks pretty fun. Switzerland is one of Neil Peart's favorite countries.

The funniest part is that they actually landed (military) jets there... They still do for some airshow-like events.

Oh, wow. Most of Canada (non-ocean coast) can
get unbelievably cold in February, compared to Europe!

The clothes you have to wear are crazy. With any wind,
exposed skin can be damaged in seconds. The dewpoint
is insanely low - it's static city, inside.

There's a reason no one invades Canada  Ever notice
that wars are always fought over warm, sunny places?

bmc knows cold!

Yeah, I've heard. I hope they have a good clothing shop at the airport. It will be a Manitoba invasion, one of the coldest provinces I've read. And yet, I'm looking forward to it! But I'll start another thread about that in a while.

Manitoba in February!!

You're going to need a warm parka, and wear
layers of clothes that you immediately strip off
as soon as you get into someplace warm to
avoid sweating. It's really bad to be wet when
you go out into the cold again. I really, really
hate having wet feet.

You need long underwear. You need warm boots
with liners that you pull out to dry when you get
inside. You need thick mitts and gloves. You need
to cover your head (most of your heat loss) whenever
you are outside, either with your parka hood or at
least a toque. I might suggest a fur hat that covers
your ears.

And heavy scarfs. And dark sunglasses for when the
sun comes out and blinds you with the reflection off
the snow. And a flashlight because it's going to be
dark 18 hours of the day. Also in your parka carry
some lock de-icer, for both the house and the car.
I also carry a leatherman.

I won't even begin to describe what you need to
make a car or truck work when it's that cold. You
won't believe it.

Manitoba in February!! I guess I'm getting old. This
is where you will find me, during the cold, dark depths
of the Canadian winter:
