Group 1 IFR renweal
Greetings!
I am going to be renewing my group 1 IFR rating (in the red bird) in the next little while and was wondering if anyone has had a recent experience regarding the renewal ride (what did the ride consist of exactly?)... Also, anyone has any study notes that I can use to refresh my IFR knowledge a little ? Been going through the instrument procedure manual,CAP GEN and what not but I would really like to get my hands of some notes to prepare from before the ride.

Thanks a bunch!

I stumbled across this secret document once:

Re: Group 1 IFR renweal
Part of the second reference in the reply posted by CS included:
Pilot in Command
CARs 401.26 and 401.27 state in part: “the holder of a valid private pilot license or higher may act as pilot-in-command of any aircraft for the sole purpose of the holder’s flight test where the test is conducted in accordance with CAR 401.15. This means, that for the purpose of this flight test, the candidate is deemed to hold a valid instrument rating and may act as pilot-in-command. Therefore, there is no requirement for you to issue a temporary instrument rating to the candidate so that an IFR flight plan can be filed.
It has been many moons since I conducted IR flight tests, so my question concerns the sentence in red; does it mean "filing and flying an IFR flight plan in IMC? Or is the trip flown in VMC conditions?

Hi John,
For the purpose of an IFR flight test the candidate is deemed to hold an instrument rating and can file an IFR flight plan AND conduct the flight test in VMC or IMC. Examiners prefer the candidate to file IFR and ideally the flight should be conducted in IMC although it is not mandatory.
You will be surprised as to how many candidates have not flown in IMC prior to taking the flight test.

Trapper:
Thanks for that. Back in the mid-eighties, we could issue a temporary Class II for the ride if necessary. Even that was done carefully, as not many of the light single- and twin-engine trainers had serious anti-icing...

I would recommend that every instructor (and any motivated
pilot, soon to take a flight test) review TP 14277E - Pilot
Examiner Manual. Educational!
