Hay River Sched DC3 down at YZF. Had engine problems and crashed trying to return to the field.

Looks like they crashed at the field after attempting a 180. Everyone made it off with minor injuries. That's good news as YZF was a bit tense for about an hour while the details emerged.

Yes Joe does fly the Sched. Apparently they had 2 DC3's heading to YHY on the Sched. Heard Joe was flying the first bird, the second plane was the one that went down.

Don't know wx details, but if one is feathered, and it's within weight limits, returning to a field on one should be a non event. Wonder why it wasn't. Happy everybody is fine.

WX was fine. They lost the engine right after rotation. Payload seemed to be about 15 pax or so, about 1/2 full.

I wasn't there. I have been "there", but not today. Under those conditions, it should have been able to climb out with no problem. There may well have been other factors at play.higharctic wrote:WX was fine. They lost the engine right after rotation. Payload seemed to be about 15 pax or so, about 1/2 full.
Re: Buffalo DC 3 down at YZF
This brings up an interesting issue for me. The DC-3 was certified a long time ago in an age when I don't believe there was any requirement for one-engine inoperative climb gradients. Does anybody know the details of the certification of this type?Doc wrote:I wasn't there. I have been "there", but not today.
