Very ambiguous reports as of yet, but a tragedy nonetheless. Some reports say crash, others say "an accident NOT involving a crash". The above article almost sounds like he was accidentally ejected from the aircraft.
RIP.

My guess...a floatplane prop strike.

An excerpt from the article that would make this the most possible explanation. My condolences to the family and friends...
She said Kowalski, 67, was on a fishing trip with a fellow pilot in Ontario province when the accident occurred while the plane was still on the ground.
She said the friend "heard a noise, and he was gone."
Im not sure what else it could be?

More details here:

"Friday morning, Ontario Provincial Police confirmed Kowalski had been standing on the plane's floats as the it approached the shoreline. When the plane hit shore, he lost his balance and fell into the propeller, suffering a fatal injury."
Is it normal to be standing on the floats while the engine is running?

Yes. Quite often myself or one of the crew gets out to grab the shore or dock in an especially nasty docking condition. However, we would usually stop the engine about the same time or very soon after the docking assistant jumps out. That doesn't mean the prop is stopped yet..CpnCrunch wrote: Is it normal to be standing on the floats while the engine is running?

Re: Plane Crash reported-Jim Kowalski on board 05 Sept 2013
In my 10 seasons as a float/seaplane pilot, I would have to say this is "Abnormal". I do remember electing to do this once or twice in my career. It was preceded by a detailed briefing, but I really did not like to do it.Is it normal to be standing on the floats while the engine is running?
Condolences to those affected.
Re: Plane Crash reported-Jim Kowalski on board 05 Sept 2013
Yes, sad.
I agree that this would be "abnormal". The only circumstance where I could imagine doing this would be when docking in a very strong wind, or current, where you can idle at the dock, to hold the plane stationary with power, while it is tied. Even then, severe briefing! Not a common circumstance....

The amphibious Cessna A185F aircraft, registration N1694R landed at Dedee Lake, Ontario and was taxiing to shore with the pilot and one passenger on board. As the aircraft was approaching the shore, the passenger got out of the right side of the aircraft to help secure the aircraft. The passenger maneuvered around the wing strut and continued to move forward into the path of the turning propeller. The passenger sustained fatal injuries. The pilot made radio contact with the Red Lake airport and reported the occurrence, and a local air operator was dispatched to the site to assist. Both the pilot and passenger of N1694R were experienced floatplane pilots.
