Ft.Nelson
Anyone know whose aircraft crashed downtown Ft.Nelson? Just happened at roughly 4:30 BC time.
Re: Ft.Nelson
Hope the pilot isn't hurt too badly. Looks nasty.

Seawind 2000 according to the register. An all plastic aircraft, isn't it?

Here are some updates from a Ft Nelson site.
Not sure how the TSB can confirm t hat so quickly!"The Transportation Safety Board has confirmed the initial cause of the plane crash in Fort Nelson was engine failure and fire.
Updated: 30 minutes 10 seconds ago
Based on the airplane’s mark and a search of the Canadian Civil Aircraft Register, the aircraft is a private amateur-built Seawind 2000, registered since August 2013 to an owner in the Yukon.

A witness to the plane crash in Fort Nelson says the plane flew past his office in flames, and that it appeared as though the pilot tried to land the aircraft down the dump road or 55 Street in front of Kal Tire. They say they saw the pilot be rescued and taken to hospital"

Good News - Pilot released from hospital!

This has to be a first. A witness saw a plane on fire before it crashed, and it really was on fire!

It was a Seawind.GyvAir wrote: An all plastic aircraft, isn't it?
Re: Ft.Nelson
I would expect you'll find the pilot at one of the local watering holes tonight. Good job, bummer about the plane.
Re: Ft.Nelson
Easy! Pilot lived, and told them what happened.CFR wrote:Not sure how the TSB can confirm t hat so quickly!
News photo online this morning showed a clear shot of the side of the Seawind, with the hidden side spewing flames. Caption read "aircraft is believed to be a single-seat Cessna". Bloody ignorant reporters.
Re: Ft.Nelson
Via the media, every airplane crash is:
"a single-engine Cessna; witnesses heard the engine stall; it was on fire; it nosedived and the highly-experienced pilot, employing exemplary skill, heroically avoided hurting anybody on the ground.."
Unavoidable. it's ingrained in our Hollywood-American psyche.

Yeah but was the flight on a Flight Plan?
Every journalist knows that always makes the difference between a successful flight and an inevitable crash...

Re: Ft.Nelson
Because the pilot lived through what must be a frightning experience and the only thing hurt was the airplane, we can make light of the incident if that floats your boat but at least there will be some information coming from the incident.
I am surprised the media didn't ask about the black boxes or if it was a terrorist act.
If the airplane was a Seawind amphib, it has a rather large engine mounted on a pylon sticking out from the vertical fin. I wonder if this accident will have any effect on efforts to certify the airplane.

Re: Ft.Nelson
Depends on the cause of the fire. Lose fitting versus poor fuel line routing would have a different effect on certification.
Not certain I would want a prop whirling behind my head in an accident!
