Research Study - Free Online Pilot Safety Training
I am launching a research study that will assess the impact of electronic pilot safety training that is organized into 5-7 minute ‘snap-courses’. I am seeking help recruiting participants for the study and ask that you would consider encouraging your colleagues to participate. There is no cost to participate and all who complete will be emailed a completion certificate at the end of the 4-month study, for their records. Participants are free to withdraw from the study at any time.
The total amount of training that participants will be asked to complete is about 3.5 hours covering the topics of fatigue management, aviation safety statistics, and aeronautical decision making. Participants will be periodically asked to complete safety attitude surveys as well as knowledge tests. All training and testing will occur online through a research portal website.

I think you need to either modify your exclusion criteria or allow for non-submission of some survey questions / provide a "not applicable" answer -- a lot of the questions do not pertain at all to private pilots that either fly their own aircraft, or rent in a minimally structured commercial environment.
ie. I do not fly with crewmembers unless you count my wife (she is quite adept at reminding me to switch tanks, close the flight plan, and put the landing gear down)
ie. I do like my job, but it has nothing to do with aviation (other than allowing me to pay the bills)
Would like to help out but it is hard to imagine how my response to a lot of these questions will be useful.

Firstly, thank you very much for investing your time and expertise in the study! The more people who participate, the stronger the conclusions I will be able to draw about the effectiveness of computer-based safety training.
The survey tool is a standardized instrument, and because of that you are 100% correct that it is not a perfect fit for every pilot's situation. I appreciate you trying to answer the questions to the best of your ability. Within this study, I am looking at change from the beginning until the end of the study 4 months later. After you have completed the training, at the end of 4 months, you will be asked to complete a 2nd safety survey with the same questions. What my study is looking for is any changes in safety attitudes that may result from being a part of the training (changed from the first to the second taking of the safety survey). So even though it's not a perfect fit for every pilot, the instrument should be able to identify changes over time.

There are a few research questions in the study, mostly associated with distributed versus massed practice. Distributed practice means spacing training out over time (such as 5 minutes a day for 10 days) while massed practice refers to training all at once (50 minutes in one sitting). A few of the study questions associated with pilot safety training are:
• Does distributed practice improve knowledge retention compared to massed practice?
• Are participant reactions to distributed practice better than the massed practice ?
• When given the freedom of choice, when do participants complete snap-courses? Is natural human instinct more aligned with distributed or massed practice?
No grant applications needed - the study is fully funded.
I posted here because I need pilots of all experience levels to volunteer for the study so that I can gather data to better understand the optimal method of teaching safety skills.

Interesting. Wouldn't these questions already have been answered in other fields? Are you expecting different results for this field? Why would it be different?
Sadly in aviation, knowledge is not always correlated with safety outcomes. Every pilot is taught the basics of safety, but I'm not sure that this actually makes safer pilots. Can you quantitatively test that the methods you are proposing can actually lead to safer outcomes (ie a statistically significant reduction in accident rate)?
