Instrument renewal ground questions

Post by 800man »

Hello, just curious as to what sort of questions to expect on the ground for a group 1 renewal, first one since my initial.
I'm comfortable flying the approaches in the sim (where the renewal will be), Guessing I'll be asked about takeoff minima, alternate minima, sliding scale, approach ban.

Cheers,

Currently have a dropped ceiling at 8 feet in the sim. Would that get me a fail?

Expect questions from the Cap Gen. Might want to focus on the following:

Aerodrome Operating Restrictions - Visibility;
Application of RVOP procedures;
Take-off Minima;
Approach Ban - General Aviation; and
Alternate Aerodrome Weather Minima Requirements.

Also, do a thorough weather and notam review before your ground test. Know the precise weather requirements for your alternate. Know how the winds are going to affect you in your hold.

All the advice so far sounds good. Remember that individual pilot examiners are responsible for devising their own questions to gauge your understanding of the requirements. Many will ask a few wider questions, then narrow on any area that seems to be weaker. Most PEs have"favourite" topics/questions that they like to ask, so maybe talk to others who have renewed with the same examiner.

Know where to get information if you can't remember it off the top of your head. Know when to second guess yourself (may have more to do with the PE's personality than anything: does "are you sure about that? .... Positive?...." mean that they are trying to lead you to the right answer, or is it them testing whether you're going to second guess yourself? For the most part, people who do one of these don't do the other!)

Good luck.
