Even it looks amateur in landing but still I am amazed when an airplane will land on a ship at the sea. :) . Wishing to be a pilot in the future.

G'day

I wonder what the winds were over the bow.

Cheers...Chris

According to the notes, it was 14kts wind plus 9kts steam, for a total of 23kts over the bow. Published stall speed: 27kts.

What was the point in the guys dragging along, hanging onto the struts during first part of the takeoff roll? @4:30 or 5:15 point of the video

Surely they can drive faster than nine kts? He could have backed in then instead of parallel parking.

Entertaining, but I'm not sure the purpose of the whole stunt. Airplanes land and takeoff from purpose built ship decks all the time ;)

Be more entertaining to watch them do it with a twin otter….

I have looked down at the freighters in English Bay many times and wondered...

Avcanada disclaimer: I do not imply that I can do any better and that this pilot is not skilled.

I too would enjoy seeing the mighty otter land and take off from the deck of a carier without the hook or catapult.

There are pictures of the beaver with the alvis-leonides engine doing just that on one of the british carriers.. I'm sure it wouldn't be that hard ;)

in the past, a C-130 Hercules did it without any hooks... I mean, "landing" and take-off...

There were rumours that an otter from a certain orange and black operator had done it.. but I call foul.

Pretty sure that was a sloppy attempt at making sure they were generating full thrust power. Like holding the brakes on a runway while leaning the engine before releasing for the roll. The deck might be a tad slippery to just use the brakes though.

They absolutely didn't know what they were doing as they just about got taken out by the tail. Move to the side away from the craft boys!
