Canadian DeHavilland Chipmunks
Chipmunks folks:
Good day!
Looking for info/data or photos of the the first DH Canadian Chipmunks prototypes c/n 001-003. Particularly C/n 003 who is known to have gone to Argentina as a demo aircraft c. 1947-48.
If someone has/ knows more details or have pics of them plz post! I understand there were some canopy differences in the Canadian models.
p.s If you have some current Canadian Chipmunks still flying plz post also!
Tks in advance!

Re: Canadian DeHavilland Chipmunks
If you need to know anything about a specific Chipmunk, I could PM you my father's email. He was one of the authors that wrote the book "The DHC-1 Chipmunk: The Poor Man's Spitfire." He was allowed unlimited access to the DND archives, Canadian Aviation Museum archives and the archives at de Havilland (now Bombardier) to get pictures, files, previously classified information, etc. There's at least 10 pics of the prototype CF-DIO-X in the first 20 or so pages of the book alone, along with several of it being built on the shop floor and more from the first time it flew.
A picture of Chimpunk No. 3 (LV-NRY) can be seen here: http://forum.keypublishing.com/showthre ... tion/page6
If there's anything else you want to know about the chipmunk, the book has everything and makes a great Christmas gift! (Shameless plug here).

This is the definitive book on the Chipmunk and a must have if you are a Chipmunk fan
A very well written and researched book on the aircraft
...isn't he the best pilot you've ever seen?....Yeah he is ....except when I'm shaving.........
Re: Canadian DeHavilland Chipmunks
Here's a shot taken in 2010 over Ottawa (Photo Credit - Peter Handley.)

CF-RRI (RCAF 025) and CF-BXG. Not any of the first S/Ns you're looking for but this was a pretty unique situation to get not one but two beautiful Chippies in the air at once.
RRI is still in the Ottawa area, but I ferried BXG to its new owner in California shortly after this photo was taken.

This is 1:48 scale but it is still one of the many Chipmunks that I have flown. What a really great little aircraft to fly

They did do a conversion on 1 aircraft to a Rover 90 turboprop and called it a Turbo Chipmunk.Colonel Sanders wrote:I have never seen an airframe crying out louder for a Walter turbine

Why a Walter? Would a PT-6 be too thirsty?
Here's one for sale used to belong to Frank Borman.

Re: Canadian DeHavilland Chipmunks
@DHC-1 Jockey: those re great photos... Goes to show t you don't always have to screw up the lines of a pretty airplane just to put a turbo on it.

I guess it would be pretty difficult to find a Gypsy engine to put back on there. It looks awful with that Lycoming on it.Beefitarian wrote:Why a Walter? Would a PT-6 be too thirsty?

Re: Canadian DeHavilland Chipmunks
Not RRI, but here are two of my favourite shots. The first one is the one that is on the back cover of the book, and the second one I took at Centralia, where these aircraft used to be based.
A little tidbit of information: compare the tail of the Chipmunk with that of the Mosquito. Aside from the size difference, they are almost identical.

Re: Canadian DeHavilland Chipmunks
I went to school with an ex air force navigator/bombardier who owned a super chipmunk, s/n 041. Looks like he donated it to the CWHM a while back. Here's a link to the page for that aircraft...
http://www.warplane.com/vintage-aircraf ... craftId=41
The owner's name was Hank Dielwart and he was a walking encyclopedia on Canadian Military aircraft the last time I knew him
AFAIK, he still lives in the North bay area.
