Live (Aid) 8 Concert(s)
20 years after the fact, the world is a different place...This years efforts will bring good music, great bands...however like the original 1969 Woodstock show...will this African Aid concert still have the same feel as the original one in 1985, or should we just focus on this effort it will bring for relief to the people of African countries?

I seen Bryan Adams this morning and he was really great in concert. He sang "All for Love" and a couple other good songs. Tom Green is pretty great too, who is he?
Did you know the artists for Live 8 are all travelling to Scotland for a demonstration this week? I really hope they're work influences this G8 meeting.

didn't waste my time watching it, what a bunch of BS. Who the @#$! does this Geldof character think he is. He has nerve to criticize the contributions that our government makes. Why should us as canadian taxpayers have to suffer and be without. We already pay enough in taxes. Easy for all these rich rock stars to embrace these causes as they are compensated for their time, and they can afford it. I refuse to listen to these bleeding hearts and their so-called worthwhile causes. How about instead of eliminating the debt in Africa we focus more on eliminating the corruption that breeds the poverty there..........................

I say good job!
Not only did people have a good time on a great saturday, but the message has been sent out that I for one hope is heard and taken to heart.
For those who think it was a waist of time...
I didn't see you trying to change anything! These musicians only got rich cause people like us went out and bought their music. So don't start blaming them for wanting to start something that can only lead to a better planet.
I hope the PM and the rest of the elected 'cronies' at the G8 do something about this and don't just laugh it off as such a nice thing we all did.
If you do care, send the PM an email and let him know what you think about the idea. I did.

Oh and Bonus to the Bare Naked Ladies for starting the national anthem at the end of the concert! PERFECT ENDING BOYS!
Adanac

If there is any wisdom in rotorheads post, I would have to say he is correct about one thing for sure. They do need to remove the corruption in order to ensure the monies that come out of our pockets reach the intended people.

Unfortunately that's the same even in "developed" countries.LostinRotation wrote:If there is any wisdom in rotorheads post, I would have to say he is correct about one thing for sure. Live8 isn't about asking for more money.
It's about cancelling the debt that lots of African countries owe to the G8 nations, debts that have been around for decades. The countries can't afford to pay back the money, so they are hit with interest charges, which add to the original debts. Servicing the interest rates on the debts is costing those countries billions of dollars and that's money their own people desperately need for basic necessities.
It's also about asking for fair trade with the more developed nations. Because the poorer countries owe money, the rich countries are using that as a bargaining tool to force the poor countries to trade their goods at lower exchange rates etc, and that lowers the amount of incoming cash the poor countries are getting.

True a concert isnt the answer but it does raise awareness. Famous musicians have something the rest of us dont - recognition. I could go start singing and who would care? I think its great that they are using their notoriety for something good and that we arent hearing about them molesting kids or picking up hookers like other famous people. And yes there are problems here in Canada but to think that we have money to spend on beer etc and there are kids dying every 3 seconds in Africa should make you think. People being slaughtered for being different, or for wanting freedoms and rights is worth taking note of. To say that trying to make a difference and make the world a better place is BS tells me that you're ignorant and self centred.
The concert is also about trying to get the G8 countries to reach Lester B Pearson's idea of spending 0.7% of GDP on foreign aid. Watching that concert made me proud to be Canadian and I agree that the anthem at the end was a nice touch. Keep on Rockin in the Free World was also a perfect song for the occasion.
In the end, a concert and even millions of dollars thrown at a problem wont solve anything. However, increased awareness and a willingness to help will do much. Just look at the response after 9/11 and the tsunami. The resources are there, we just need the will.
As my bumper sticker says "If the people lead, the leaders will follow"

maybe i am ignorant and self-centred, but i'll tell you one thing. I have never in my life asked for a handout from anyone. I have busted my ass for everything i have. I am tired of people sitting there and criticizing us for not doing enough. Guaranteed that if the government increased foreign aid or eliminated the foreign debt it would never be enough. I think that as Canadians we are more than generous. I just think that at some point you have to say enough is enough. What about all the people that are homeless and starving in our own country. I believe that our government has a duty to help our own before anyone else. I'm glad that these rock stars can feel so good about themselves at the end of the day for what they did. Give yourself a pat on the back and go home and enjoy the$12000 gift you recieved for being there. I can't help but wonder how many people that $12000 can feed.................
