Ah I see. So you uncles had a greater calling yet you, after some research, declined an opportunity (which would have been a paid position, with benefits, and security (something your uncles might not have had)).

And with this information you can condemn all of Africa (or at least one African country) as not being to your satisfaction (in terms of security).

Having been to and worked in five African countries (two were UN contracts) I can only say that I was fortunate enough not to get into any trouble. Minded my own business, did my job, and stayed out of trouble. I did watch pilots, mechanics and flight attendants get into trouble time and time again simply because they were ignorant or arrogant enough to believe they were still in Canada or worse that they were above the law.

But you know...after 25 years.... it was perhaps time to move on....

But who am I to judge a man (or woman) of conviction and faith?

I'm not sure of the exact standards or rules of engagement on this sort of thing, but did this thread go from a simple question about the ins and outs of working at a Canadian aviation company to an oblique Godwin in just 10 (5?) posts?

Although this is off topic as well I left it in as it pretty much sums up what I was thinking.

Rj's are in Sudan (North and South), Congo, and i think there may be one in Mali still.

I've worked for there. The shifts are 2 months on 2 months off. Training is completed on your time off. Hotel and per diems are included. Hotel is not the best but has free breakfast which means you can stock up on food for later in the day and there is a BBQ outside to for personal use, plus mileage paid for using your car.
Once initial training is done you go back home and wait. In my case is was 3 weeks but some are almost immediate. Airline of choice depends on price. They use KLM, AC, Brussel air, etc.
On arrival a company driver will pick you up and bring you to your base. Most bases are close to or on the airport itself.
The accommodations are included. Per diem given every week. What you spend depends on you but most people can bring a lot of it back. The pay is low compared to most places but there is a multiplier percentage added like base pay. You can think of it as 50-60 an hour but you only get 4 pays and need to make it last for 4 months. The per diem is cash.
Work can be easy or hard, 2 AME's per aircraft so it comes back broken you can have a long day.
I was only there for one tour and in my initial training I was told most AME's leave after 1 or 2 tours. Honestly this is the most fun I had in years. I chose to resign because being away for 2 months was too hard on my family but I would still be there. I work with guys who have left the company for the same reason but one of my friends works 3 months on 3 months off and gets to be home with his wife and kids for half the year.
The only downfall is the elimination of the overseas tax credit but this is the government.
