A question about Canadian FBO's???

Have been flying in the corporate sector in the US for over 3 years now and since my career in GA began down here, I didn't really notice this until recently flying to a few various Canadian airports.

Why is it that the FBO's in Canada don't have courtesy vehicles for crew? I thought maybe it was just a select few that I had ended up at but a friend of mine confirmed that such was actually true about the FBO's back home.

The Shell AeroCenters have them. Even the flying club in Kindersly, SK has a car you can take. Alot of places will offer you their own car if you just need to run into town for lunch.

They should have them, and the FBOs where I fly out of do (cyxu). Also, when I did my trip out east, I did get an offer from an Esso in CYHU to drive me to the hotel, which I thought was nice. I guess it depends on which FBO you go to.

I am actually shocked that the YWG FBO doesn't have a courtesy vehicle and yet YQT does..

-less corporate traffic, less competition for fuel sales, fewer perks to entice flight crews to stop there
-fewer regional airports competing for traffic to large centres. ie. if you're going to Toronto in a jet, its either YYZ or YKZ and that's pretty much it-total of 4 FBO's. For an equivalent city of 3.5 million in the US, I'd ballpark that there would be at least 5-8 regional airports, each with 1 or 2 FBO's trying to entice corporate traffic in.
Hence the crew cars, nice pilot lounges, steak dinners, snooze rooms, etc

you forgot the big one -Higher Taxes!!! canadian gov't think aviation is a cash cow so by the time you pay for all the fees and operatiing expenses and insurances the fbo is likely to driving a 15 yr old car or van that
is in need of repair. the good thing is that most will give ya a lift in and back if you gas up 300 plus liters 75gallons ~ . some of the bigger ones have a rental car agency on site.

How about 2 transmissions in 6 months @ 2500.00 each. Were working on the third until caught hotroddin it and everyone lost there priviledges cause we sold it.. Best one is we caught an itinnerant and he asked to use the car to go to town to buy mogas. We fully understand the high cost of fuel but we are a business and if charter companies did as many free flights as we do free use of facilities,coffee,washrooms,lounge,and snooze facilities there wouldn't be a charter business alive and well. We must be the only business going that only is able to recover costs on approx. 75% of traffic handled. I would imagine our place is the same as elsewhere. If not let me know how you do it.

The Brandon Flying Club has a van they will let pilots and or flight crews take for the day if they wish for a small fee ($10) but for that fee you can use it all day with unlimited milage. Often when the van wasn't around id lend out my own personal car for the pilots and crews to use. I didn't mind doing it either because I knew for the most part they were glad that someone was willing to let them borrow likley the second largest investment they had made. 99% of the time when the car was brought back to me it had been fully fueled and that wasnt even asked for by me. I thank you guys who did that that was not needed.

Agreed that not every FBO can afford to have a courtesy car, but a ride for lunch should be offered.

The Aerocenter in YYC said they didn't have cars anymore. Luckily Tim Hortons is only a few blocks away.

The Monterey Jet Center (California) has 3 courtesy cars, and a van to give rides. I have used their Beetle convertible a couple of times to get lunch. Their competition has a PT Cruiser as the courtesy car.

When I worked at the Brandon Flying Club, it was an Ford Taurus Station Wagon, but it was a great car and most everyone filled it up when they returned.
