You mean a Lancair in general or a Turbine Lancair in particular ?

I flew a "normal" lancair. It was fun. Amazing to see what power such a small plane has. 260 KTAS at FL130. If I remember correctly it could go as fast as 320 KTAS at FL270. Well equipped yet very basic at the same time. The pressurization almost blows out your ear drums. Who needs a stall warning anyway ? Funny speed brakes as well. Very slippery, almost impossible to slow down.

Then again, I was only used to small slow singles and twins, so my impressions might have been a little biased. I'm sure you would experience it differently

I'm sure there are many turbine Lancairs. The Walter
turbine is similarly amazing in the Legend. A friend of
mine owns this one:



The climb rate and speed are incredible. I would be
fascinated to see it go head-to-head with a P-51 or
Hurricane or Spitfire

There is a local guy that has another very hot homebuilt (make not given to ensure anonymity). He framed a TC enforcement letter and has it on his office wall. He was busted for doing 270 kts in a Control zone while in level flight. Not bad for 300hp

Personally though these turbine 700 hp homebuilt speedsters scare me. With speeds in the mid 300 Kts I really wonder about flutter margins and aero elastic effects....

Something like half of all the turbine Legends built have had fatal crashes.....

If I am thinking of the same person I believe this was quoted as a selling point one of the times he listed this bird for sale! I thought briefly about owning that aircraft until I realized I had neither the pilot or repairman skills needed to prevent my untimely demise. Nice airplane for the "5 most unusual airplanes" thread though...

The red one above looks to be Walter powered but there's a Canadian registered grey one with a Garrett.

Yup. Owner wants to put in a Garrett! Not
sure why. Even with the Walter, he gets an
incredible amount of attention from Enforcement.

He is a fantastic stick. His wingtip vortices
literally sizzle. I am not making this up.

Are there there speed limits and or regulations for certain types of pilots/planes/operations? And if so would ATC data be the only way to enforce such regulations?
