Most bang for my buck

Post by MDTS »

Hello All! I am currently on the path to complete my commercial multi/IFR training. I have around 100 hours total. I am wishing to complete my commercial multi/IFR in the next 6 months. I'm curious to what everyone thinks on how to complete this the most cost efficient way. I have had people tell me to wait and build another 30 some hours before starting the commercial, then go on to do the multi/IFR, others have advised to do the multi right away and once around the 135 hour mark start the commercial licence and follow it with the instrument rating. I would like to hear how some people went on to complete there licenses and what order. Thanks!

It is more cost efficient to do Multi and Instrument training at the same time. You need 50 hours PIC cross country for the Instrument Rating. So, the most sensible way to do it, IMO, is do your cross-countries now, then do your CPL flight test at 150 hours (you'll need about 10 - 15 hours to prepare for the test), and then you have roughly 48 hours remaining for MIFR and whatever else you may want to do.

I don't know if that's the most bang for the buck but that's how I went.

PPL -> Night Rating -> some time building until I hit the XC PIC required for the IFR -> around 110 hours I started the Multi Rating -> 115 to 120 hours I started the Multi IFR -> after that I did the commercial training and was done with everything and still had around 20 hours left to build up for the 200TT required for the CPL.

I lost track of how much I actually spent but I stayed within my personally set limits so I was pretty happy with that. I think it was a very efficient way since I still had almost 20 hours left at the end to fly around and do 'whatever'.

Whichever way you decide, don't just do the minimum 300NM XC...take that plane and bugger off for a while, you'll learn a lot more about 'real world' flying by doing a 1000NM xc with several stops that you ever will doing the FTU prescribed 300...

Have fun!

+1 on the multi IFR during buildup. It's a bit steep of a learning curve from a 172 or whathaveyou.... so some complex single time might help.... I did my float rating for that.

Awesome! Thanks for the reply's! I will try and figure in a long cross country, I'm in the Regina area, and wouldn't mind trying to figure out a Ontario fishing trip or something!. Id love to do a float rating but would have to go to BC or Winnipeg to complete it, which isn't out of the question, but for now trying to focus on completing some training while I have some money in the bank! Thanks again everyone for the replys!

+1. Although it may be difficult to get access to a plane during the night, it's worth it to fly late at night and gain the Night cross-country and Night total time towards the atpl.

Good luck.
