Medical validity

Post by C-FART »

Ok can anyone explain to me which one is correct...feeling pretty dumb today so be gentle
For PPL's under 40 Cat 3 medical according to CARS is valid for 24 months...or so I thought.
Looking at table on back of Medical certificate in the second row...Private, Gyroplane, Balloon, Recreational "Under 40" column says 60 months

I kind of thought the 60 months was only for private gyroplane and balloon pilots but the note on the bottom says ATPL and commercial pilots may exercise PPL privileges until the end of the validity period....

So what is it.

An ATPL (and also a CPL) reverts to PPL after the medical lapses.

To answer your first question: Cat 3 Medical is valid for 60 months if you are under 40 Years.

As stated by the "GAS MAN", any licence you hold is validated by the Medical and if, for instance you hold a Cat 1 Medical that is valid for only 12 months, it becomes a Cat 3 after that time if you do not renew it. Your licence remains valid for you to exercise the privileges that are allowed with the Cat 3 medical (ie. Private Pilot).

On the Medical Certificate there is a "comma" after Private, so it is not saying "Private Gyroplane".

The Medical Validity Period of Medical Certificates has been extended to times beyond those listed in the CARs. The extended validity periods (ie: 60 months for Private under 40 etc...) that are listed on the back of the current Medical Certificates are the new periods.

The CARs have not been ammended to reflect these changes. Pilots are officially operating under an exemption from the applicable refereneces in the CARs to the validity periods. Details of this exemption are contained in the AIP and can be found in AIC 14/00.

Just as a matter of interest:

If you have your Cat 3 medical done the day before you turn 40 it is good until the first day of the 61st month.

For a Cat 1 medical it will be good until first day of 13th month - only saves you one medical, but that's one less to pay for.

Timing it correctly might save you some money and aggravation.

This is straight from the horse's (TC) mouth.

Thanks guys! Exactly what I was looking for! Was pulling my hair out trying to bend my head around that one. Great info and very helpful tips. I am sure I will need more help in the future as I try to decipher the "Bible"

FART:

Instead of pulling your hair out, next time click the search button and type medical validity. And find that your question was already answered here:
