This is how people get killed (video)
Just saw this, thought it was worth a post. It reminded me of the incident in Norman Wells in 2010 (?) with one person getting killed by a wing strike. Crazy people out there doing dangerous stunts.

That's a caravan indeed. Likely a skydive operation no doubt.

Re: This is how people get killed (video)
I had a conversation with a fellow about 2 weeks ago about this sort of thing and the consensus among his friends was that there was no problem ....... "Because nobody got hurt," and I'd been too hard on him.
Re: This is how people get killed (video)
Much like low-level aerobatics, this could be a display of consummate skill. There are a few determining questions that I would need the answers to before deciding:
1. Was this briefed? Did the ground man and photographer know exactly where the plane would be and which direction was safe if something went wrong?
2. Can the pilot repeat this, exactly, on demand? Height exactly the same, wing the same distance away etc..
3. What risk analysis was done regarding what could go wrong and what procedures were to be followed by all if they did go wrong?
If they can answer those questions correctly, then my hat is off to them as an extremely skilled airman. If they can't, then they were just lucky that their display of questionable airmanship did not ruin at least two lives in an instant. If you want to watch how this could have turned out, go watch "Catch 22"!

Wonder if that fella knows how lucky he is..........

Re: This is how people get killed (video)
One of the things they dont teach in flight school...risk factors for buzz jobs.
1. You re really really excited about this buzz job.
2. Its a little bit dark.
3. Beer has been consumed within a mile of you or the buzz site.
4. Pretty girls (on board or on the ground).-note: not usually a risk factor if they re flying.
5. You re heavy.
6. You re a float plane.
7. You know someone is making a video.
8. The weathers not that great.
9. Variable tailwinds.
10. You really want to do a buzz job.
Note: 1. And 10. are the highest risk.
Anyone got anymore?

Jesus that wingtip comes close to dragging.. wouldn't have been all that great to go cartwheeling into the idiot with his arm in the air, the cameraman and whoever that girl is who's yelling in the background at +120kts ! Crikey!

There are no words to describe how stupid that is.
Re: This is how people get killed (video)
Just think, he could have gone on to a career as an airline pilot and then
killed hundreds in a similar stunt.
Another good reason for why psychological factors need to be given more attention.

Re: This is how people get killed (video)
It's interesting to me how my attitude towards "buzz jobs" has changed over the years. They used to seem pretty fun. Now, my attitude is more like "That isn't what aeroplanes are for" Watching that video, and seeing the caption about beer, was difficult not only because of the colossal risk, but because it's just hard to watch someone mis-use a useful machine. Kind of like watching someone use the back of a socket wrench as a hammer, or use a pair of pliers as a wrench. Poor craftsmanship.

Re: This is how people get killed (video)
There have been countless buzzjobs gone bad and enough caught on video to make a montage of disaster. Things like this are STUPID AND UNPROFESSIONAL, stop the nonsense before more people on the ground and in the air get killed.

I'd add the competitive aspect to it. One of my few buz jobs ever was in response to the other company in town responding to my room mate's fly by. So I was the 3rd in a row and apparently I really got the ball rolling cause there were 3 more that day. I'm torn because seing a fully loaded 1900 go by in ground effect with full power on preceeded by a pair of Navajos in formation below tree top level at close to 200 kts was one of the highlights of that summer for sure.I know it was the last straw for the chief pilots and companies involved and they made sure it was the last one of the entire summer...The "torn" part comes is where had there been an accident with any of the aircraft it would have been a black mark on my entire life.
Re: This is how people get killed (video)
Something about this video tells me is is viral and crafted in a studio somewhere. Not unlike the wing shredding acro plane lands perfectly well, the eagle Montreal that flies off with a baby, despite no eagles in Montreal.
My hunch tells me this come out in the days/weeks ahead. I don't buy it at all. I call a well done fake.

Re: This is how people get killed (video)
What would the responses be, if the camera was on a tripod and no souls on the ground?
Re: This is how people get killed (video)
What I don't understand with all that talk about how stupid or not stupid those buzz jobs are, isn't it also highly illegal? I mean, being stupid and potentially injuring or even killing your friend or anyone on the ground is one thing. But couldn't you also lose your licence for something like that? I remember CAR 602.14 in this case.
Or am I missing a loophole here that makes a buzz job actually legally acceptable and it really would come down to the question of stupidity or not?
That would mean that regardless of how good of a pilot you are and if the whole thing was planned or not you are still not legally entitled to operate your aircraft at that altitude. In this case the lowest you can fly a 'buzz job' over a 6 feet tall person is 506AGL. Without any other obstruction around that is.(2) Except where conducting a take-off, approach or landing or where permitted under section 602.15, no person shall operate an aircraft
[...] b) in circumstances other than those referred to in paragraph (a), at a distance less than 500 feet from any person, vessel, vehicle or structure.

Re: This is how people get killed (video)
Really? You think if only a plane and pilot is involved it is somehow OK?What would the responses be, if the camera was on a tripod and no souls on the ground?
Some of you just dont get it. Things go wrong. Even for experienced air show pikots who do it for a living?

Re: This is how people get killed (video)
MIQ ..... a more appropriate regulation would be:
Reckless or Negligent Operation of Aircraft
602.01 No person shall operate an aircraft in such a reckless or negligent manner as to endanger or be likely to endanger the life or property of any person.
This one of the few regs which has the possibility of landing you in the crowbar hotel under the Aeronautics Act.
But, nobody was hurt in this display, so what's the big deal? I'll bet that if he'd decapitated "buddy" on the ground that he'd feel bad for having just flown 3 or 4 feet too low and made a mistake that could happen to anybody .... so as a result, nothing at all should happen to him in the way of ramifications.

Re: This is how people get killed (video)
Crimes should be allowed to slide if the perpetrator feels bad? That's not sufficient for someone who killed another person, even if it was an accident, if the pilot's actions were dangerous and illegal; drunk drivers don't get off scot free because they "feel bad...and made a mistake that could happen to anybody". Besides, this wouldn't happen to "anybody", because most people aren't stupid enough to fly three or four feet above another person.single_swine_herder wrote:But, nobody was hurt in this display, so what's the big deal?
