United Express (opr by Trans States) runway overrun in YOW

Post by matrix »

cbc.ca
A plane has gone off the runway at the Ottawa airport.

The 44 passengers are safe and on a city bus, the Ottawa fire department tweeted.

The plane, an Embraer 145, was a United Express flight from Chicago.

Fire crews are controlling a fuel leak, and hazardous material crews have been dispatched.

The crew reported damage to the undercarriage.

Big cell was moving right through YOW at about that time. I was zooming around over Gatineau about that time and it was seriously dark in that direction with lightening etc. .. looked pretty nasty from my perch at the top of our box. Winds were very light at Gatineau however.

That is runway excursion #3 for Trans States Airlines at YOW.

#1) Landed long and fast halfway down the runway 25 in rain.

http://dsp-psd.pwgsc.gc.ca/collection_2 ... 04-31E.pdf

#2) June 2010-report not out yet. Overran runway 07 in rain.

http://avherald.com/h?article=42d059bc

#3) Runway 32 excursion while landing in a heavy rain condition with nearby thunderstorm.

Believe it or not their callsign to ATC is waterski? It is.

Not sure what runway this one happened on, but landing 07/25 in the rain in YOW can be treacherous.

Plus those models of ERJ-145's don't have thrust reversers.

I was in YOW for #2 and it was a long landing.

They are "Waterski" and if I were them I would change it!

Strange you should say that. A passenger on the plane who was interviewed on CTV News channel said almost the same thing! Well, he was wondering if "there was something wrong with the runway", as this airline had a similar incident last year.

Appears that it was runway 32. Sounds like they went off the side not off the end.

The left gear is, if you look close you can see the gear is out to the side and the wheels are up in the air. Judging by the way it is sitting I'd say the right gear is too.

It looks like the flaps are down which might mean that something went awry early in the landing phase. Regardless, 3 oopsies from the same company at the same airport in the same type of plane? mmmmm, my faith in the regionals is dwindling by the second.

Undoubtedly hydroplaning, and coming in a little hot with the gust factor added to approach speed. And yes...it does beg the question: What's up with their training standard or experience requirements?

Someone should open an AMO in Ottawa specializing in Embrarer heavy maintenance. Is this the company Air Canada wants to do some of the transborder flying? I hope not!

Trans States is learning the hard way in how to train their pilots.
Maybe they should pay their pilots more and be able to attract more experienced crews.

I for one do avoid travelling on US commuter if at all possible as I feel safer with Canadian Carriers and as well, like to throw my travel bucks in their(Canadian) direction. I will not under any circumstances fly on a BE1900 or similar type with an American Commuter carrier and I discourage any family/close friends from doing so....

That Coglin(sp) Q400 accident Buffalo sealed it for me..............

The thread on this incident over at airliners.net has them going on and on about how here in Canada we don't groove our runways. I find that line of reasoning kind of funny, since it is the same regional that has gone off the runway 3 times now at YOW. According to some on there not having grooves is also why the AF bird went off the end at YYZ, I guess landing long and not hitting reversers for 9 seconds had nothing to do with it eh?

Huh,
unstabilized approach and non-adherrance to SOPs....

Where have I heard that recently?

Ottawa is not busy enough nor is the weather often poor enough to require a CAT II.

that has to be one of the silliest replies i have ever read and I must say typical canadian aviation thinking -- spend millions on putting shops and bars into an airport terminal and not spend a cent on improving operational facilities -- like a grooved runway and a cat 2 landing -- seems that places like Europe figure it's good policy and airports far less busy that Ottawa have it -- I'm sure wpg has no more "bad"wx than ottawa -- go figure -- only in canader -- silly
