the magic of a shirt and tie
We have a system where we spend 3-9 months vetting someone for a RAIC that covers everything from my (lack of) criminal history to my mother-in-law's maiden name and birth address.
I'm a commuter. 90% of the time I commute in uniform. The other day, I went to the airport from a kids function and brought all of my work items with me. I was amazed at the magic of a uniform. I'll get my toothpaste and shaving cream confiscated if I travel in regular clothes but the second I put on a shirt and tie, the extra 30 ml of toothpaste becomes magically ok. This isn't even the stupidest of rules that they have. I'm sure anyone doing this longer than me has had worse experiences. But seriously, who makes up these rules??

Out of curiosity, where you wearing your RAIC around your neck? Or did you have it and showed them?

BE Driver,
You're just getting started. The security rules keep getting dumber and dumber. See latest memo about no more yellow passes. For YYZ based WJ pilots, we have to surrender the YYC red pass and after YYC gets it back, YYZ will call us to say we can pick ours up. In the mean time, we can't work and have to go to the pass office twice- once to surrender the pass, the second time to pick up the new one.

If you're travelling for work, you're allowed certain things, that would be required to do your job... Including extra liquids, even something like a Swiss Army knife, if they believe you need it for work.
At least it's a little relief...

We'll try this again. AvCanada keeps kicking me off every time I hit submit.
Bede - what is this about no more yellow passes? My red pass is about to expire and it took me 11 months to get in the first place. The RCMP is going to love the list of places I've been over the last five years. I'm not looking forward to having to go back to a yellow pass or any other method for any period of time.
No swiss army knives, just my required kit for work. I do overnights and therefore, I require, among other things, toothpaste and shaving cream. It boggles my mind that I can travel with a suitcase of oversized tubes of toothpaste while in uniform. Once the tie comes off, all becomes verboten. If you are able to produce a RAIC and your schedule showing that you are indeed traveling for work, you should have the same privileges as if you are in uniform. For that matter, RAIC's don't show your employer so who is to say that I don't work for a company with no uniform? Also, those special liquid scanners are starting to show up at airports negating the current liquid and gel rules anyway.sstaurus wrote:If you're travelling for work, you're allowed certain things, that would be required to do your job... If I am out of uniform, I have been keeping my RAIC in my pocket and producing it when required. I'm not looking for any special treatment, nor would I use my RAIC or carry over limit items when I am not traveling for work. You are required to show your RAIC or a NEXUS card when going through the NEXUS line though.SM16 wrote:Out of curiosity, where you wearing your RAIC around your neck? I always deadhead/commute in uniform... Security is less of a hassle and it always gets me an extra set of cookies, and an offer of chips and licorice from the awesome crews at WJ. The curmudgeons at Jazz only give me the whole can of coke on occasion... I would have thought my 3 bars would have more pull than that!
(I'm only kidding about the Jazz service. They are often very pleasant!)

Hey Bede, If you are almost expired then you could submit your new 5year clearance form so that by the time yours does expire the new one will be ready and you only have to go once....if you have been to places for more than 90days that's the only concern I would have for the clearance if not it would take max 1month to renew if there's no errors or issues.
Cheers!

Corporate mechanics travel in uniform (a few I know). They wear the white shirt with two bars...........
Apparently works wonders in Africa and the Middle east.
