If you had 2 weeks gas money and a 185 on straight floats...

I know this is mostly a working pilots forum, but I lurk here and get lots of good info. I have 2 weeks set aside in late July to go way north and camp and fish. Usually I go up to Northern Quebec either 100 miles north of LG4 or up near George River (Kangiq....). Thinking about NWT this year or generally out west. Labrador is also a possibility. Mostly looking for cool terrain a big river and maybe some wildlife and fishing. Once I land I can be mobile with an inflatable that I can also portage.

I know the avgas situation in N. Quebec, but have never been out west, or to Lab

I'll be flying from Northern Minnesota, or my friends camp near Sudbury.

I'd love any advice on where you guys that know the terrain would suggest, and if your working in the area I'll buy the beer when I come through.

Wow, look at that. A Cessna 180 sharing the river with a reciprocating steam-engine powered boat. The Twentieth Century sure provided some neat juxtapositions.

If fishing is what you like to do, I have to echo CLguy's opinion, Chantry Inlet in NU. You can walk across the river on the backs of all the fish. And tasty fish they are, too. Guaranteed trip of a lifetime.

I'd be a little worried about leaving the plane for too long on the waterfront in yda just bc it's a fairly busy place in the summer after the bars close.

Never been to Dawson but it's on my bucket list.

On you're trip up one can't go wrong with the East arm of Great Slave Lake. Amazing scenery and some truly epic trout fishing. Since it's a large lake the swells can get quite big but there's lots of little inlets and coves to tuck a 185 in. Plenty of friendly camps around too that enjoy the occasional visitor. Some of the surrounding lakes have decent walleye fishing as well!

Minto Inlet on Victoria Island. I remember going up there one spring and looking through about 10' of crystal clear blue ice. One of the most amazing things I've seen in my career. It's beautiful when the ice is out too.

In the 60 years since your father was here, the river has done a bit of eroding of that beach, and in 1981 a large dike was built along most of the riverfront, to prevent flooding when the river breaks. It was built high enough that town has not flooded since. The only possible place to beach on the town side is the ferry landing, and obviously you would be in the way of the ferry that runs 24-7 all summer. The only way to do it would be to beach on the far side of the river on a fairly rocky beach, and then hike to the ferry to come across the river to town. There is no gas available except at the airport 17 km away. There is also a reasonably strong current and not a whole lot of room along that beach on the west side, which could be challenging for a pilot not experienced in river beaching.

I disagree about the erosion. It depends on the water level. When it's really high, it's a steep bank, as appears behind the airplane in the photo. (yes made a little steeper by the addition of the dyke)

Photo is taken at low water and that that shallow muck-flat / back-water is still there, upstream of the ferry.

I tie up to the public dock, when I'm there. Same location as the one the Klondike is docked at in the 1954 pic.

The OP did not say that he is inexperienced or incapable in rivers or otherwise.

That part of the Yukon River, particularly if you point into the current along the dock is very benign.

The OP should get a 180 (or a Beaver) so he can burn a little Mo'.

NW Ontario. Pick an empty lake with a nice sandy beach, and setup shop. Somewhere between armstrong'ish area maybe. Hot humid summers, great fishing. Wouldn't be far for you to go either.

Brought back some memories.

Here is a picture of the Klondike in 1957 - Whitehorse - this was when they had all been removed from service - and before the Klondike was moved and of course the big fire.

That's me with my parents - Dad did his tour as pilot on Halifax Bombers in the summer of 1944 - He joined 51 Squadron (RAF) on April 7, 1944.
On May 1, 1944 he and his crew did a trip to "Malines" (Mechelen???) in Belgium - 70 years ago today!!

Me - the little guy would become an AME in the early 1970s.




My 2 weeks spent with a 185 on straight floats would have to be a trip from Vancouver B.C. to Anchorage Alaska - with camping supplies and a carton of camera memory cards!! "Gods' Country"

I'd second the South Nahanni Region for the pure beauty and not for the fishing, but it's getting a bit far for only two weeks and to see much in between. The highest waterfalls in Canada is about 1700 miles from the middle of MN. Lots of history, some challenging flying and just wicked scenery. Check out either Wolverine or Simpson Air Services out of Fort Simpson to get an idea of where to go and what to see, but the Painted Mountains, Rabbit Kettle, Cirque, Ram Plateau are just a few I can think of and it has been more than 10 years since I've been there and really looking for an opportunity to head back.

I have a fishing camp in Northern Labrador and could accommodate bush plane operators with a home base. I could have avgas ready, you could explore Labradors North Coast and stay at my camp, supply meals and do some fishing.

Hit Yellowknife, Fort Simpson, Camp a night at Little Doctor west of Simpson. Spend a day in the Nahanni Park then head over to Muncho Lake and take the Alaska Highway North. Atlin, BC has a nice little music festival every summer, would make a great float fly-in. I hope you're fond of jerry cans!
