I remember Ronnie once telling me "They sent me to Pickle Lake for two weeks, twenty years ago and I'm still here".

Gosh, how do two simple pictures of a bygone era interest me so...
I'd give my left nut to fly that Bellanca!!!
Any of you guys able to give us an idea of what she was like to fly daily?
All the best,
TPC

Re: Old Photos
Most up and coming young dock hands went for rides in BTW at one time or another back in the mid 1960's to early 1970's. I went on several trips but naturally did not get to fly her. It had a throw over type yoke and the throttle quadrant was on the left side of the cockpit. You could not easily reach the throttle quadrant when sitting in the right seat. It got off at about 85 mph and cruised at 120-125 mph. I never saw the pilot lift a float out on take off. You didn't have to. I was told that if you did try to lift a float that the aileron drag would make it difficult to keep it going straight. The ailerons ran almost the length of the wings. It did have flaps but they were not certified in Canada and were locked up and covered over. There was an 8'6'' hatch in the top of the cabin roof for loading bulky items. This hatch had also been covered over at some time in the past.TeePeeCreeper wrote:Gosh, how do two simple pictures of a bygone era interest me so...

There are still a few of the guys around who flew BTW when I was at HAS but they are dwindling fast.

Here are some photos of a Bellanca Skyrocket CF-EQR that was owned by Associated Airways. The pilot Max Ward pranged after flying into a whiteout somewhere north of Yellowknife. The film was processed in August of 1953. Photos taken by Jim McAvoy.

Also thanks NWONT for the cockpit pic of BTW. I don't have any good cockpit pics.

AP and NWTONT,
Thank your for the write up and pictures!
Sounds like she was an interesting bird to fly on a daily basis!
What was the approx empty weight and how much of a load could one haul with her?
All the best,
TPC

I couldn't remember the numbers so I referred to the CAHS Journal Vol 9, # 1, spring 1971 edition.TeePeeCreeper wrote:AP and NWTONT,

Gross wt 11,700 on skis or floats.
Empty wt on skis 6821
Empty wt on floats 7176
Floats were EDO 12,700 made by MacDonald Bros in Winnipeg
A typical load on floats in it's heyday on a short trip would have been around 3500 lbs. However in it's last few years of service they were trying to baby the engine and the max load we hauled was 2500 lbs.
Of course there were the usual tall tales of some super pilot hauling 6000 lbs.

Here is the entire world's fleet of Bellanca Aircruisers parked at the same dock. Shown are CF-BKV, CF-AWR, CF-BTW. Also shown is Bellanca CH-300 Pacemaker CF-AMO. I can't identify the aircraft facing the camera, possibly a Fairchild of some sort. Photo taken by Ronnie Morrison July 1943 at Lac Dubonnet MB.

AP, any chance you have the negatives or something I might be able to get a proper print off that picture?
If it wasn't obvious to all now... May the world know that I have a "lust" for the Bellanca seaplanes that I was unfortunately born in the wrong "age" to have partaken in!!!
All the best,

Re: Old Photos
Those are great pics Antique! They say Harry Swanson could rip a beer cap in half with his bare hands. Maybe Liquid Charlie could attest to that truth.

That is fact and the only person I knew that could settle Harry down when he got a little frisky was Burt Mc --

Harry had arms like Popeye. He could also snatch a fly out of the air as it flew past.squawk wrote:Those are great pics Antique! They say Harry Swanson could rip a beer cap in half with his bare hands. Maybe Liquid Charlie could attest to that truth.

Lol. Cathy told me after he retired he'd go and dig up boulders in the backyard out of boredom.
