It could have been Pooh Air....

I don't understand why gear down... In the possibly unlikely event that the event went sideways, would you really want to be hoping that the gear would retract in time before the water landing?

The dreaded dual engine failure with stuck landing gear. I'm glad you're not my sim instructor.AirFrame wrote:I don't understand why gear down... Re: Wizz Air performs low flyby during airshow in Budapest
Quite disappointing that they flew over the bridges
As an AvCanada discussion grows longer:
-the probability of 'entitlement' being mentioned, approaches 1
-one will be accused of using bad airmanship

How about GPWS warnings like "Too Low Gear" or "Terrain, Terrain, (Whoop Whoop) Pull Up"?I don't understand why gear down...
Re: Wizz Air performs low flyby during airshow in Budapest
You need a ground proximity warning when you're flying 200' above the ground? I'd hope you know your airplane and sight lines from the cockpit better than that.
One flock of birds can ruin your whole day. I don't think Sully went into the Hudson with gear down either. The dreaded dual engine failure with stuck landing gear. I'm glad you're not my sim instructor.
Re: Wizz Air performs low flyby during airshow in Budapest
That's not it. GPWS/EGPWS is not the easiest thing to disable on a transport Category airplane from a MEL/regulatory standpoint or practically for that matter, and the simpler solution is just to do the flypast thingy with the gear down in the landing configuration.AirFrame wrote:You need a ground proximity warning when you're flying 200' above the ground? Re: Wizz Air performs low flyby during airshow in Budapest
Ah, that makes more sense. They just wanted to silence the warnings. One annoying thing about having a GPS that's tied into your intercom is the constant "terrain, terrain" warning that it keeps b*tching in your ear... At least, when flying around the Vancouver area where being near mountains is normal. You'd think Garmin employees all lived on the prairies...

Having the gear down would not necessarily silence an EGPWS. A GPWS not sure but the EGPWS was not silenced by the gear being down if you were not near an airport.Rockie wrote:That's not it. If I remember correctly the Dash-8 had one button to push to disable the EGPWS, we used it when going into strips that were not in the database. Even with gear and flaps down it would still yell "terrain Terrain" when getting low. The disable button was part of the checklist.
I would think an aircraft like an A320 would have something similar to disable it whether gear is down or not. Maybe its totally different from the Dash-8 so correct me if im wrong.
Re: Wizz Air performs low flyby during airshow in Budapest
The EGPWS in the 320 can (and must be) disabled when going into airports not in the database. Some individual warnings such as flaps and glideslope warning can also be disabled.

I don't know; the competition is pretty fierce in this category!Changes in Latitudes wrote:And the award for worst airline name goes to...

Kramer may disagree.
Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not after you!

Re: Wizz Air performs low flyby during airshow in Budapest
Just like how the Airbus computer wizards made it so that if you attempt to set take off power with the park brake on, you must obviously be trying to take off so the computor automatically releases it for you a la Ethiad ground test. I'm sure it's an equally well though out computer thing that goes something like; If you go below 200' with the gear down the wings probably automatically fall off cause you're obviously suicidal...AirFrame wrote:I don't understand why gear down... Just like that first airbus airshow crash where the test pilots tried to go around but the computer retarded the power for them cause they were obviously trying to land...

Second pass by the A320 was gear up with a bit more speed.

The rest of the airshow looked pretty good too with the opening act being Peter Besenyi (world aerobatic champion and Red Bull Air Race developer) taking off from a bridge in an Extra 300:
