Re: Upgrades
I know, I just wanted to stir the pot a bit. However, it does bring up the point that people can be trained to upgrade in much less time than is the industry standard, and that the time requirements operators use for hiring are more a function of excess applicant supply than anything else.esp803 wrote:Military to Civilian is an apples to oranges comparison.B208 wrote:Try C17. Check your facts and the CAR's.
King Air 200's or any aircraft under 12566lbs max take off weight do not require an ATPL to be Captain.
CAR's min for a 704 Capt is 1200 hours. (It is in the standards 724)
We were 704 due to the number of seats.
The insurence policy had no reference to the number of hours required by each pilot.
You are right the opportunity has to be there. It just so happens when you go really far north and choose to settle in for a few years the oppounties are unlike anything in southern Canada.
My bi-annual posting is done...ta ta

Re: Upgrades
I don't think he's saying an ATPL is required. He's simply saying that most companies won't even look at upgrades without an ATPL. And also it could be possible that the insurance companies require that Captains have ATPLs which therefore makes the ATPL a requirement whether it's in the CARs or not.youflyboyscrackmeup wrote:Illya

I understand what he is saying.
The OP asked a question. I gave my take on the question. Illya says my take is BS. I say it is not.

depends who you fly for, none of our Medevac machines have Otto-pilotB208 wrote:If you are flying in the arctic your average legs are probably over an hour, so let's say you've flown 1000 legs, half of those the captain would have been flying, so you've flown 500, of those 500 hours how many were spent with the autopilot on? With a few exceptions, I'd wager my right nut that the 600hour float pilot who does .3 legs in an airplane without autopilot is a more highly skilled pilot then the guy who has done 2 flight safety courses.

I spent several years in the Arctic then transitioned to a southern job.
Flight planning is flight planning. I have a more elaborate flight planning program provided to me in the south then I did in the north. I found in the Arctic on poor weather days you would need to think beyond the regulations and have 2-5 back up plans. These back up plans are for when your destination and alernate weather changes and the forecast then gets changed to match the conditions. Not really a forecast at that point
Depending on the time year some communities would restrict fuel to scheduled flights and medevac flights so that added another level of consideration. In the south you have (major city to points in the USA) many options for alternates and better approches, multiple runways all the resources you need.
In my northern job we did not have any working auto pilot so everything was hand flown and raw data. During the transition period in my southern job I found one of the biggest challenges was learning the automation. It has been several years now and I still find it easier to just "do it" the tell the auto pilot what I want it to do.
Again...this is just an account MY experince. There are plently of challenges no matter where you are and what you are flying.
I took some advice from a Captain when I first started in the industry as a dispatcher. He said to stick with your first company until you go Captain then stay Captain there for a few years then move on. That advice has served me well.

Gooooood GRIEF!!!
The self righteousness in this thread is just...well I guess I shouldn't be surprised
The guy asked a simple question. "yes or no, do people hire DEC's at 1200 hours." To me it seems a pretty simple "no, not externally." He didn't ask if he deserved it, he didn't asked if he worked hard enough for it, and he didn't want most of your worthless opinions on "HOW COULD YOU POSSIBLY EVER THINK YOU'RE GOOD ENOUGH!! blah blah blah." There is no harm in simply asking if that is a possibility anywhere. I see no evidence to suggest he meant otherwise.
