Finishing college or starting flight school?

Post by imapo16 »

Im a 18 years old student from Montreal,Quebec.Ive been going to College for 1 year now and need 2 more years to graduate. But the problem is that I dont really enjoy what Im doing but trying to finish it so I can get a College Diploma.I heard that major airlines requires a college diploma. My question is that should I finish College 1st before starting flight training or is it possible that you start your flight training and at the same time you're going to College.I need some help? Its now summer and I have nothing to do but IDK if the flight schools will affect my grade on college or is it possible do to both at the same time?Any Suggestions will be appreciate :P

I would do both at the same time as long as you are able to fly a few days a week, why waste time!

Unless you're ridiculously organized, efficient and self disciplined I'd say do it after. I understand you have 4 months off each school year? If this is the case, some people do the associated ratings then (PPL, CPL, etc) if you can afford it. I have read some students finish the ratings on their breaks, excluding the MIFR and do a few seasons on floats on their time off .Chances are you're taking a loan for college... minimize your debt as much as you can for flight training. It's expensive.
Have nothing to do? Get a job and save money. Pick up some books and start studying. From the Ground Up is a great start.

What's your diploma in? If you can transfer into the trades and focus on that, it will create more value for you in the long run if the flight training doesn't work out. Find an apprenticeship program and start working. Do your flight training part time + save money. You're still young.

Don't get into a relationship. Avoid debt. Those two go hand in hand. Avoid debt. Don't have a baby.

One other option to consider is applying to a college that has a flight program. History has proven time and time again that if you are not passionate about what you are doing you will be less than completely successful. If your current college experience isn't working for you, but you want a college degree, think about combining the two together. Sault College (Sault Ste. Marie, ON) takes applicants from right across the country. Confederation College (Thunder Bay, ON) is another program. Seneca College has a longer four year program that gives you a university degree (I think...don't quote me on that). If you have good grades from high school I would apply. I know it's a little late but you never know if they have filled all spots for their September enrollment yet. Check out each school as they offer different programs. I am familiar with Sault College. With Sault you will come away with CPL, ME - IR (commercial - multi engine - instrument rating).

Good luck. Nothing worse than having to do something you don't like.

As-tu appliqué pour le CQFA?
Finish cegep and even consider a BAC, nobody likes science pure.
Start Your PPL over the summer, try to dispatch at a flight school as a summer job.
That way you will get to know people and get aviation experience.

If you continue going to school during the day and want to work your ass off, your schedule could look something like this:

Monday night - work
Tuesday night - ground school
Wednesday night - work
Thursday night - ground school
Friday night - work
Saturday - flying/work
Sunday - flying/work

I did this through my private license and the packed schedule taught me to be organized, disciplined and how to avoid getting caught up with pretty ladies. The working pays for the 1 or 2 hours of flying on the weekends and you slowly but surely work your way through a DEC and a pilot's license.

Tu peux m'envoyer un PM si tu as besoin de plus de renseignements/consignes, j'ai fait mon privé dans un aéroclub et les autres licenses au CQFA.

It's a bachelor's degree, not a uni degree. Fine point but important. You can't do a master's (at least not an MBA) with the Seneca thing. A friend found out the hard way.

If you want to apply for Seneca (and I would if I were you, since you could end up going straight to GGN or JZA), hurry your ass up. I don't know when registration closes, but if it hasn't already, it will soon. Donc fais de la recherche et fais vite.....
