hyperophia
dear friends,
last week i went to have my cat1 medical examination. there, my doc said TC will ask for a written report from an eye expert.
today i went to have my eye exam and unfortunately i am diagnosed as hyperophia. i am wearing glasses since i was two and never was aware of this problem..???
he says my depth perception is 2/9 (according to the test with 3-D figures)
anyways, is there a way to improve my vision ? or depth perception any surgery ?? laser ??? has anyone you know worked around this problem ?? how ???
i need some ideas
thanks

I'm sorry to hear that ... I'd start here:

You may have a typo ... try here as well:

Hyperopia is merely being far-sighted. It's not as common as myopia (near-sighted) but both are just a problem with your lens focussing either too far ahead or too far behind.

PIC, did the doc actually deny your medical? If so, will he/she grant you a class 3? If your medical was denied on both counts, tell them you would like to have your case sent to the medical review board. If you really want to fly, and the Doctor is not supportive, find another Doctor - you have nothing to lose by trying the review board. TC will advise you of the tests you require. They may grant you a Cat 3 with a conditional/potential upgrade to Cat 1 with experience. If you get that - take it and run with it.
Cheers,
Snoopy

dear snoopy thnks for the support..
the doc didnt actually deny, however he said i will have problems flying for AC or a $100m jet full of passengers....
he said he'll write his report but TC probably give hard time on it !!!
i already hold european cat 3 medical... and so far with about 600-700 landings never had even slight trouble with my vision...
this was my dream and i have changed my whole life lately to fly commercial...
i'll try with my doc first and see how cooperative is he.. then i'll see...
i will inform..
thanks again..

PIC,
When it come time to get your eyes examined, go to an Ophtalmologist, not an optometrist. I am talking from personal experience here, but optometrists are only interrested in selling you glasses. An ophtalmologist is an eye doctor. He can provide you with all the information you need. He can even do surgery if need be. Eyes are extremely mportant to a pilot, so go directly to the expert. It is a little more $$ but well worth the investment.

I recommend you go see an eye doctor that actually has pilots as patients, your AV doctor will recommend one to you. I don't exactly know about the condition you have, but is it correctable at all with glasses? I would also do alittle bit of research on the effects of a surgery so you will have questions to ask the doctor once you get there.
"he said i will have problems flying for AC or a $100m jet full of passengers...."
Well either you can fly or not, I don't think working at AC and flying a $100m jet makes a difference, if he did say that I would have definetly reported that, very unprofessional of him.
If you can fix the problem with glasses take it, avoid surgery if you can.

well i went to my AV doctor today again to tell him the story i had with eye examiner. the eye examiner i went is one of the doctors accredited by TC. so i guess his words counts..
and even worse, my AV doc sent me to him...
today, i was told that i have to solve my problems with TC. even if the report comes bad he said he has to send his findings to TC on my case. he added "they dont care if you appeal or not !?!?"
so, it seems i got in to deep trouble here, and my dream may have to end right before it starts.
i guess i can only wait here for what TC decides....
by the way, i do wear glasses. the problem is depth perception... which i disagree with them... i believe i have enough depth perception to fly..in fact i was not aware of this problem thru my 5-6 years of flying and about 15 yrs of driving ...

PIC,
Don't give up hope! First of all, if the Doctor didn't sign off your medical, this means it goes to TC for approval. TC will let you know what, if anything they require. If it comes back denied, then you go the medical review board, write letters, jump up and down etc.
If you feel the doctor you are dealing with is unsupportive, or will not back you - find another one. True, the information will already be with TC, but if you have to fight it further you will want a good ally on your side.
Never mind that BS about not flying for AC or milliion dollar a/c. The magic paper is the Cat 1 medical. That is the thing that will allow you to fly forsomeone! Some airlines do have vision criteria, but that is half a career away before you have to worry about that. Get in the door first!
When you do get your medical, remember that in future: Always choose your examiner carefully!!!! Try to stick with one that knows your history and that you get along with. Failing that, at least shop around and get some referrals.
Good luck,
Snoopy
