AME M + S + E license. Is it worthwhile? impressive or not
If someone has a M + S + E education out of college, I am sure it is a positive thing. But is it worthwhile? Had anybody done this route before? How about M + E? or M + S?

Book smart doesn't really impress experienced AME's.
Solid experience does.

Sounds like a colossal waste of time.

And money.
To me it would look like you couldn't figure out which way you wanted to go with your career. But if you've got the cash, and time to burn fill your boots. I doubt it would make anyone any more hirable.

Does the expression "Jack of all trades, master of none" ring any bells?

If you had graduated in spring of 2002 or 2009 and found yourself in looking down what was clearly going to be long cold road of unemployment as a zero time apprentice at that time, I would say taking the additional year as an E or S student would look like a positive and productive option when viewed on your resume.
Graduating this spring, when there should be reasonable employment opportunities for those that wish them, I'd say you're better off to get yourself out of the sandbox and into the real world where you'll actually learn some real skills (and earn something at the same time).

There are quite a few basic elements that an M gets that neither E or S get in their basic training.
I would think it really depends on what licence you're going for first and who you're planning on working for.
...if you're going to work for a helicopter outfit in the north it's definitely worth while.
...if you're going to work for an MRO it could be beneficial depending on the size of the MRO.
...if you're going to work for an airline don't bother.
...if you're going to work for a manufacturer don't bother.
"Education is never a waste of time...what you choose to get out of it may be."

I would say if you are really interested in making aviation your life it may not be a bad thing in time. I first achieved my M1 in 1985. Then some years later i had the opportunity to do extensive sheet metal repairs with some of the best old school sheet metal guys. I went on to add the Structures licence and after that an A & P. Many guys get shoved around the globe chasing this profession and acquire many different qualifications and endorsements. Credentials are not a bad thing but you better back it up with "skill and knowledge" Good luck with your career.

If you have an M licence - you can still do structures and avionics work as long as the AMO you work for allows it.

Really,TC should make it more clear the privileges and limitations a license holder has, so these misconceptions would not be so widespread.

If you have an M1 and M2 license... you could do structures and avionics work for a properly rated AMO.
Geez did I say that....? Or just think it....?

Yeah, IF you have the training. An M1/M2 cant go into Air Canada and do a repair on a pressure bulkhead on a 777 just because the AMO has a structures rating.iflyforpie wrote:If you have an M1 and M2 license... you could do structures and avionics work for a properly rated AMO.
Having an M1/M2 does not immediately qualify a person to do something they have never been trained to do.

Thanks. Seems like it is not worthwhile to.

No - it doesn't.Having an M1/M2 does not immediately qualify a person to do something they have never been trained to do.
I was just trying to make the point you don't have to have an S rating necessarily to do structures work.
