Suncor Energy is suing the Edmonton Regional Airports Authority for $500,000 after the company’s plane was damaged during a July 2012 landing on an improperly maintained runway at the Edmonton International Airport.
According to a statement of claim, Suncor’s 2008 Bombardier Challenger was severely damaged during a landing on Runway 12 on July 26, 2012.
Prior to that landing, Suncor claims, the airport used sealant to “repair or patch cracks and irregularities” on the surface of the runway. That sealant then failed and came loose from the runway either before or during the landing, the suit states.
The sealant debris struck and adhered to the aircraft, causing damage to the engine, hull and fan blades. Though the plane was still able to taxi down the runway after landing, the damage was extensive enough that the plane’s engine had to be removed and disassembled.
The airport authority was negligent in “failing to perform its maintenance and repair operations on ground surfaces, runways, taxiways, aprons and other areas.”
Specifically, the suit states, the authority failed to ensure that the runway was kept clear of all foreign objects and other debris.
Suncor is seeking $494,994 in U.S. funds for the repair of the airplane, as well as further repair costs of $9,652 Cnd.
The Edmonton Regional Airports Authority is responsible for the management, administration and operation of the Edmonton International Airport, Villeneuve Airport, Cooking Lake Airport and the now-closed Edmonton City Centre Airport.
Statements of claim contain allegations not proven in court.

Ah Edmonton.
I'm guessing Reg Milley has a brother in the driveway sealant business? Runways aren't as important as bars and dress shops after all.
