Copilot wanted for regular Flights to Kelowna
I'm looking for someone to take regular flights to Kelowna with me a couple weekends each month - my plane (172), my gas, your mountain flying experience (which hopefully is better than mine). We each pay for our own overnight accommodations.

It might help if I mentioned I'd be flying from CYBW...

Are these mandatory trips? 172 + Mountains + Wx + Inexperience + Get-home-itis = trouble

So you want someone with experience to be your safety pilot and coach you and you won't pay his hotel. Looks like you're cheaping out. Might get what you pay for.

Re: Copilot wanted for regular Flights to Kelowna
I was in the same vote several months ago and posted on here asking for help. I was overwhelmed by the amount of people willing to help. I was offered several options and in no case was anyone looking to build free flight hours. In one offer it was a very high time pilot just looking to pass on his knowledge. It was all about one pilot helping out another.
I find most people involved in General Aviation are one of a kind. Most of us are all looking out for each other and will help each other when needed.
I am still in the process and building experience in the rocks myself so my experience and knowledge to pass on is very limited.
The one piece of advice I can give is to buy fuel at salmon arm instead of kelowna.

Re: Copilot wanted for regular Flights to Kelowna
Sounds pretty good to me. I would volunteer but I could not go very often and my mountain experience is pretty much a distant memory.
Then again in a light single, I'm not really needing much "mountain" experience. If the weather is not really nice, I'm seeing what is on the Kelowna television or if it's going to take a day or so to clear up, I'm going back to the hotel or restaurant for some snacks and a nice Ogopogo Pilsner.
Those mountains are mostly made of rocks.
The manager there used to work hard to keep his prices down. The fuel price was noticeably low (Last century 1995) and they even had a 1975 nova free courteousy car. He just asked you bring it back full of gas and try to support his sponsors. Nice guy used to bicycle over to greet you when you landed.

How does Salmon Arm compare to Revelstoke now days Cracker?CrackerJ99 wrote:

Kelowna is at 2.60 a litre and salmon arm is a 1.85 and now that my plane is based in Kelowna every where else seems cheap.

Re: Copilot wanted for regular Flights to Kelowna
Buy fuel pretty much any were in BC but YLW to save a truckload of money, and closely watch fuel prices in YKA for an unexplained increase as well...
Re: Copilot wanted for regular Flights to Kelowna
These are not mandatory flights...just looking to have a weekend getaway from time to time. Or even a same day visit, fly in, have lunch and return. This is an ideal arrangement for someone who has family in BC that might want to go out for the odd visit. I do have some mountain experience, but it's limited and I don't feel comfortable going into the mountains alone - so this really is just a pilot helping another pilot kind of experience. So if anyone is interested in this kind of arrangement please feel free to contact me directly at 403-703-0698. If this arrangement doesn't sound appealing to you, I'm not sure there's a need to make a snarky comment on this forum. Speaks to ones level of maturity I suppose. I'm not limiting this suggestion to just one person either...for instance I already have two people interested that I'm meeting with next week. How often we go and how long we stay is dependent on those of us who will be going. We can go as and when, safety of course always being paramount. So no gethomeitis will ever factor into the equation. If someone needs to get home, there's always Westjet : )
Thanks for the tip re: gassing up in salmon arm! I will definitely take advantage of that!
Pop n Fresh, if you're interested, lets go to Golden and see how we manage. If you find it's all coming back to you, we'll do some other hops as well.

These kinds of posts are annoying for me too, but don't let it discourage you from the site, 'ex-NWT', most on here are good people willing to help and enjoy flying for fun with like minded pilots. What's the saying my teenagers use? "Haters gonna hate"? Or something like that? No cure for chronic bitterness unfortunately.

This sounds like a good "fly out" plan. You might be able towrangle up more people to all meet. Especially if Pop volunteers to buy lunch.Pop n Fresh, if you're interested, lets go to Golden and see how we manage.

Re: Copilot wanted for regular Flights to Kelowna
Ok. Let's see if I can "get off my buns" to go visit crabby Side Up or one of his minions to make sure I have some recollection of how to work a 172. The whole reason I got a paying job was to buy people lunch and rent planes more often. I will phone Cyndy sometime, possibly before sept.Shiny Side Up wrote:This sounds like a good "fly out" plan. Cyndy, if I were based in Calgary, I'd fly through the mountains with you in your gorgeous little "Rainbow" plane again anytime.
For more information, Cyndy is a lovely person, eager to learn, and conscious of safety (as this request clearly demonstrates IMHO). She has far more to lose if things go south than a day or two away from home!
Good luck!

I would certainly help out if I lived in YYC too, but I don't anymore.
Have fun, cyndy, I'm jealous that you get to fly for fun

+ 1 cyndy. I both like your attitude in seeking mentorship and willing to learn. I'd certainly fly with you if I was there.
Others critiquing, put a sock in it. I don't care to waste my 10 seconds reading your slag. You should never ever discourage low time pilots from seeking experienced mentor pilots. That's what this whole site, should be about. I just completed my major trip through the rocks -- well second -- and although I was comfortable on my own, I was a lot more prepared because IFLY for PIE took the time to write a long description of the BC routes. I'm still appreciative - thanks buddy!
Some of you are so cynical you'ed think everyone should pay for this. Well perhaps, Id certainly buy IFLY dinner if I see him one day.
Instead I think you pay it forward. I recently spent a little time with an 80 hr PPL sitting next to me while I was waiting for a new starter. He was doing a CC, 180 nm, longest of his life, so we talked about it, the weather, future goals, Ect. Great conversation.

Re: Copilot wanted for regular Flights to Kelowna
If Cyndy would like mentoring perhaps she could offer to fly her expert mentor copilot to Kelowna on a series of dates and times of their convenience, and wait there until her copilot is ready to return.
DId you hear the one about the jurisprudence fetishist? He got off on a technicality.

Re: Copilot wanted for regular Flights to Kelowna
Personally if I was hoping to lure an expert mountain flying minotaur with loads of experience to fly with I would not write "Copilot wanted".
Wait, I've got it! This is an elaborate way to get someone to rent a room in her friends Kelowna hotel.
An air mattress could foil the whole operation.

Anyone is free to say no, or contact Cyndy to work something out.photofly wrote:If Cyndy would like mentoring perhaps she could offer to fly her expert mentor copilot to Kelowna on a series of dates and times of their convenience, and wait there until her copilot is ready to return.
Personally I've received a lot a valuable mentoring from those with different experiences. I am trying to pay it forward as I gather experience.
Should be encouraged.

Sounds like a match made in heaven. I don't know what being the lead partner in your own law firm pays these days, but she might be able stretch to the pittances earned by a freelance Class III instructor.
Or did she want someone with more experience?

Exactly.. if you don't feel like riding or don't like the proposed terms, but someone else does, what does it matter? A thread like this ought to be viewed as the start of a conversation, that hopefully leads to some mutually enjoyable trips, not as a job offer to be jeered at. Re: Copilot wanted for regular Flights to Kelowna
You are looking for someone to hang around and fly with you, you acting as the PIC? Fair enough, mutual fun.
If you are looking for someone to teach you or be a safety pilot. It is an other subject...
Experience is worth peanuts for some people. If PROs agree to teach for peanuts... Not good.

That's right. Not every piece of advice requested is, or should be paid gig for a class 4. I for one if I am looking for some advice or mentorship, don't get offended instead of my local FTU, I might consult someone here with the relevant experience , or one of my 10,000 hr friends.
FTU's or freelance have their place, and mentors do, as well.
I've had friends be my safety pilot, and I've acted as a safety.
This is not remotely the same as free commercial flying.
Re: Copilot wanted for regular Flights to Kelowna
She's not asking for a friendly word of advice, a few emails, or a suggested route across the country. She's asking for someone, in the plane, for hours, regularly, to teach her to fly in the mountains. CYBY CYLW is a five hour round trip in a 172, by the way. That's a paid gig, and she won't even put them up for the night. A bit like the other thread where she wanted someone to fly her lawyers around for free.
DId you hear the one about the jurisprudence fetishist? He got off on a technicality.
Re: Copilot wanted for regular Flights to Kelowna
I think she actually just wants someone with a bit more experience than her in mountain flying to come along for the ride and maybe give some helpful advice on the way.photofly wrote:She's not asking for a friendly word of advice, a few emails, or a suggested route across the country. And you forgot to mention that the lawyers 'being flown around for free' are also giving their time away for free.
Anyway, I think it's good that Cyndy is trying to do this safely. However I think she would be better just to gradually build up her confidence by doing shorter flights in the mountains to start with, and building up from there. If you start off by flying on a perfect weather day, there isn't really any danger in flying in the mountains unless you do something insanely stupid like trying to climb up a valley that you can't outclimb (which people seem to do all the time for some unknown reason - presumably wishful thinking).
