Privately owned SU 27
Since we are on that interesting topic on Russian planes, does anybody know where are those two SU27s (two seaters) located. The Pride http://www.prideaircraft.com/flanker.htm website states they were sold. IT would be interesting to see them flying at the show.

These things were so awesome. I remember seeing the Russian Knights at Abbotsford in 1992.... amazing!
I guess with Cold War II starting we might not see so much Eastern Block stuff anymore.

Geez did I say that....? Or just think it....?
Re: Privately owned SU 27
When I was younger my parents got me a "Migs over Moscow" flight. I had the choice between the Mig-21, Mig-29, Su-27, or the Mig-31.
I chose the Mig-31 edge of space flight... Nothing I have done in life since comes close. I recently looked it up and sadly all they offer now is the Mig-29... and I am sure with the way things are going in the Ukraine with NATO... pretty soon no flights at all.
EDIT: Actually... they are still available:

EDIT #2: Add a picture because a thread like this would suck without pictures:
(not my picture, and most likely not the exact same plane I was on... but same type)

The US government bought both machines and nobody knows where they are.

Two beautiful SU-27's suddenly get sold to the US Government
and all news suddenly stops?
We have not heard the last of this story
and now every former Soviet country will
be bending over backwards to send more
of them stateside.

Re: Privately owned SU 27
cool pic of that Mig31, really cool.
As for those Su-27s, if I ever had so much money that I could afford a private jet, Su-27 or my MiG-29 would be my top choices

Re: Privately owned SU 27
Best part is they are probably saving money over using F-16s.
Re: Privately owned SU 27
Pop,
No f-16's/ whatever are budgeted years ahead for flight hours. Also, you have to consider how much maintenance/ logistic support does an SU27 require?
In simplistic terms, it's easy for both an F16 sqdn to play aggressor against an F15/18 etc... Because both need the flight time and mission quals.
We're given X amount of flight hours and we must "mission plan" within those hours allotted. If I fall out of say night Vision currency, because I screwed around playing day multi-ship formation, heads will roll.

Re: Privately owned SU 27
Hey I love me some sweet sweet F-16s. In fact one of my favorite T-shirts is my 30 year old aggressors one I bought when Abbotsford was an incredible airshow.
But I would imagine the most expensive parts on those Rooskie machines are the American Avionics.

Those are more likely Malaysian or Indian SU-30s....

Indeed, my mistake. Judging by the markings I'd say they are Malaysian.

Can you imagine if the Hells Angles were able to own a supersonic military jet. It would almost be the same as when the government sold the cold war Penhold Diefenbunker to the Angles.
The average pilot, despite the somewhat swaggering exterior, is very much capable of such feelings as love, affection, intimacy and caring.
These feelings just don't involve anyone else.

So what? They are not sold with weapon systems.oldtimer wrote:Can you imagine if the Hells Angles were able to own a supersonic military jet. It would almost be the same as when the government sold the cold war Penhold Diefenbunker to the Angles.
As far as Americans operating Soviet Union / Russian equipment, I recommend you read the book "Red Eagles". Written in light of recently declassified documents (used to be a SCI program). They used to have a Squadron of Soviet-Made equipment (MiG-21, MiG-17, MiG-21, MiG-23).
